Recommend a Japanese Novel!

#26
TheVinster, Thanks for your reply and the link info. Smile The 1M Challenge looks daunting at first sight, but I think it is a good way to build-up vocabulary through news reading. It reminds me of the 天声人語 by Asahi Shinbun.

I'm into American Stories by Nagai Kafu at the moment.

Nagai Kafu is great. I recommend すみだ川 (http://www.aozora.gr.jp/cards/001341/fil...37667.html). What's the Japanese name of American Stories?

for ライトノベル I recommend the 精霊の守り人 series and of course 十二国記。

I'm reading 夏目漱石's こころ and I'm enjoying it so much that I want to read similar novels in the future. Any author is fine, but preferably 日本文学の傑作.

If there's in aozora the better! ^^

Please, give me some advices! on both authors (so that I can look up) and of course, books. I'm so happy for being finally able to read literature! ^^ Japanese language and culture is so beautiful that I feel kind of blessed and proud for having chosen japanese to study ^^

The title of American Stories in Japanese is あめりか物語. It is not available on aozora yet, however you can find it at Project Gutenberg あめりか物語 by Kafu Nagai, but I find it has quite a number of typo-errors... so I prefer to read it from 国立国会図書館デジタル化資料 instead. Also, this older print version have the ふらんす物語 as well.

Here is a book review of American Stories (in English).

It seems that aozora list on Nagai Kafu have a couple of short stories, that is, 一月一日 and 夜あるき which is part of the American Stories.

It's great to know you enjoy reading 夏目漱石's こころ which has been voted by readers as the best among Japanese literature. Hmm... you might find 夢十夜 interesting too. His trilogy series (三部作:三四郎、それから、門) is also considered classic but I only enjoy reading 三四郎.

Nagai Kafu masterpiece is 濹東綺譚 (English Title: A Strange Tale from East of the River) and there are two film adaption made in 1960 and 1992. I think the audio reading can be found online easily.

You might also find it interesting to read some of his Tokyo musings and explore it further with the older Edo maps from the 国立国会図書館デジタル化資料.

Hopefully, you find the tiny bits of information useful. Smile
