Question about core6000

#1
Hey! I would like to know exactly how you guys did core6000. What I mean is, do you just read the word aloud in japanese and mentally think of the meaning? What i've been doing is read the word in japanese (out loud) and then say the english meaning (again out loud). But the problem i'm having is that when switching from Japanese to english quickly, it causes me to mess up the pronunciation of the Japanese word. I am not sure if its better to drop saying the english part entirely or what :/

Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

I don't ever say the english aloud. If I say anything at all, it'll be only the Japanese sentence.

I'm currently using the Core2k deck that's split into 10 parts. I try to keep the English as far removed from the Japanese as possible in my mind, so certainly don't say it out loud. I tend to whisper the Japanese to myself, though. A stentorian bellow would probably be better, but I don't think I'll ever be good at speaking anyway. I'm (currently) more interested in the understanding part.

The single-word cards are starting to annoy me as I tend to struggle with them. I find myself trying to think of the sentence that used the word, and get the meaning from there, which seems rather backwards. Gonna have to find a way to block those, I think.

Maybe it would be more useful to put reading/writing cards in separate decks, to focus on the reading first, which is now much easier thanks to RTK. By reading/writing I mean kanji -> audio / audio -> kanji, though I don't feel the need to actually write anything any more (again, thanks to RTK).

I'm getting a little frustrated with the scatter-gun choice of vocabulary, though I'm not really that far into it yet, so perhaps the same words come around a lot. Maybe that's mostly because I'm learning every word that comes up, rather than just the one that's highlighted though.

Really? Interesting. So you just "think" about the english meaning and the japanese pronunciation, and If you forget either of those you fail the card, right?

I only have 1740 unseen cards left of the 6000, but I will see how it goes if i only say the Japanese word for a while.

Thanks for the input!

I'm not using Anki, but I've made HTML files for reviewing the sentences and vocabulary. For sentences, I just listen to the audio while reading the sentences without furigana. For vocabulary, I also highlight difficult words at the same time, and then review the highlighted words with furigana shown on hover.
