I was curious to test RevTK on iPhoney and maybe adapt the CSS a little but the damn thing is for Mac >_<
I remember coming across a website that simulated the mobile safari browser but I dont remember the URL. I think it was iPhoney but maybe they only have an application now.

If you would like I can help you test the CSS with iPhoney or if you would like I can give you access via Remote VNC to a mac with iphoney installed.

Currently, the interface for RevTK I'd useable on the iPhone but it could definitely ne improved.

Thanks snozle, it will be difficult for me to test CSS this way though.

Well, since the iPhone dev kit is coming out only in February, I guess it's likely a windows App equivalent to iPhoney will surface.

I wonder if setting the Safari 3 beta to the 480 pixel width would be sufficient to emulate the iPhone's screen estate?

If you have an iPhone or iTouch which browsing is the most handy, widescreen or vertical?

anyone have any luck getting anki to run on the Asus eee PC?

in the default OS, I am having trouble meeting the dependency requirements (python-qt, python-sip).

I'll post a more detailed explanation of what I've tried if that will help, but right now I was wondering if anyone has had success installing on the default xandros OS.

I borrowed a friends USB CD drive and installed Ubuntu...that was really easy and from there anki was much easier to install.

I just installed ubuntu also--you can tell it's not as well optimized for the small screen, but installing new programs is a lot easier. I used a bootable flash drive which was pretty easy to set up.

For anyone who is wondering, the default OS works well with 'Reviewing the Kanji' and a Japanese IME is easy to install.

Where did you guys order your asus and how much was it. I live in japan but am thinking to buy it.
I read that there a possibility of a 14 gig version w/ windows being released in Japan, but that seems like it would drive the price up too much. Besides, I like Ubuntu!

I suppose that setting the Safari 3 beta to the iPhone's width would be pretty good to emulate the iPhone's screen. However, it will not simulate the multi-touch interface, but I don't really think that's necessary for RevTK.

The vertical orientation of the phone is the best for reviewing because the flash cards are in the vertical position.

I am really considering getting one of these, putting xubuntu on it and using it specifically for Anki.
Now that you guys have been using it for a while, can you give some feedback?
Do you like it and do you find it worth the investment?
Do you think the 4 gig is worth the extra money over the 2 gig?
How do you like using Ubuntu for it? Have you been able to stretch icons and text to make it easier to read? How it typing on it? Does it boot up and shut down fast with Ubuntu.

Overall feedback would be appericatted Smile

I should be getting mine today or tomorrow and plan on installing eeeXubuntu on it. I'll be sure to report back with full details.

おはようございます,

I am using Anki on the Eee PC with the stock Linux operating system (Xandros).
I posted the installation procedure on Anki's Eee wiki page: http://ichi2.net/anki/wiki/EeePC
Follow the "Solution 1" paragraph.

I am trying to create a package, so that users can install and use Anki easily, but it will probably not be available before 2 months, so for now you'd better use the installation procedure on the wiki, it is not too complicated.

Cheers :-)

From my personal experience, one piece of advice I can offer...don't let your cat spill a cup of water on your eeePC keyboard...anki (and the whole computer, for that matter) work much better!

I saw a bunch of EEE PCs with Windows XP in Akihabara last time I went...I also saw them in J&R world in NYC recently as well. So I assumed it was a standard option for the EEE PC..is that not correct?

I think the Japanese version is just windows XP, but the english version comes in either linux or XP

You're right, Asus' Japanese website does not list the Linux Eee PCs: http://eeepc.asus.com/jp/product.htm

So unfortunately it seems difficult to get one in Japan :-(
To get a Linux Eee PC I had to ask a Taiwanese friend to bring me one, it cost me 50 000 yen.

I really prefer the convenient and lightweight Linux desktop and system, but that's a matter of personal taste, so it's hard to guess before actually trying them... Keep in mind that a Linux Eee PC boots much faster than a Windows one and has twice as much storage than the Windows counterpart, for the same price.

yeah, 5 seconds! (if you tweak it enough: http://lwn.net/Articles/299483/)

I finally managed to compile and run Anki on the Eee PC with the stock Linux operating system (Xandros) ! It does not involve Wine or any emulator.

I posted the installation procedure on Anki's Eee wiki page: http://ichi2.net/anki/wiki/EeePC
Follow the "Solution 2" paragraph. The most difficult part was actually to compile the 5 dependencies needed by Anki.

Warning: Fonts do not display correctly, so far, but that should not be too difficult to fix.

Cheers :-)

The new eee pc 900ha model is REALLY nice. I got one and it works great. It comes with a 160gb hd (its actually much faster than the ssd drives on most of the other models) and windows xp. The price is extremely attractive too. Since you get so much disk space, you can pretty much load anything you want on it too...

And it's back from the grave!!
Sorry but I figured I'd use this old thread for my question, to make it more convenient for other people who look up the subject later.

I am thinking to get an asus EEE notebook, but am still pondering about which one to buy:
The 701SD or the 901SD. I am in Japan, so it will be xp, but with a little help I can put ubuntu on it.

the 701 is so cheap now at yodobashi, about ¥30000 with 20% points, which makes it effectively ¥24000. On yahoo auction i might get it for less than ¥20000 even.

Does anybody have experience using anki and internet pages like reviewing the kanji on the 701? I am not so worried about it working or not. I AM WORRIED ABOUT THE SPEED.
How fast is the 701 in general, do you find it acceptable?

Thanks

I use an EeePC 1000H and love it. I put ubuntu on it, even though it came with windows. 1024x600 resolution works great for most things including anki/revtk.

Thanks,
I've decided to get the eee 900, still has the 8.9 inch screen, and a little faster than the 701. It also has the bigger trackpad and better camera, and is about the same size as the 701.

It runs faster out of battery than the new 901SD, and doesn't have the atom processor, but it works long and fast enough for me. The price was nicely in between the 701 and 901 too: about ¥39000 with 18% points (yodobashi). Anki and websites run fine.

Still using xp, thinking about ubuntu, but am a little worried about complications that may arise from it, so maybe i will stick with windows.
