各 Primitive ("each")

#1
Hello all, this is my first post, I'm pretty new to this, am up to lesson 16 or thereabouts. Am learning around 30 kanji a day.
Doing my reviews and 各 is really causing me grief Sad
What sort of a keyword is "each"?
All my stories involving 各 are super shaky.
Can anyone out there shine some light onto this?!?
Or has this been discussed before somewhere?

I intend to become an active member of this forum, but am just finding my feet right now!

Abstract words like "each" can be difficult for building images/stories, and one solution is to replace them with something more concrete. It's best to choose a new word that is related to the kanji in some way, e.g. related to the original keyword or derived from the kanji's etymology or readings. I'd suggest checking the user stories on this site because sometimes someone has a great idea.

Suggestion: readings of 各 are kaku & onoono. The latter makes me think of Yoko Ono, so associate her with the kanji and then use that as building block (primitive) to make others.

First of all, link 各 to onoono: Yoko Ono is cloned (ono-ono) and although it doesn't work too well, each version has the same walking legs and mouth.

Now use that to make other characters (number, kanji, keyword and story/image)
292 格 status: After a change in her status, Yoko Ono now lives in a tree.
293 略 abbreviation: Yoko Ono has moved to a rice field and writes you an abbreviation of her name & address, i.e. Yoko O., Rice F.
294 客 guest: Meet my house-guest: Yoko Ono. OR: Yoko Ono shows you round her house but when you ask if she owns it she says, “Oh no, in this house I’m just a guest”.
299 落 fall: Hoping to make her flowers grow, Yoko Ono waters them too much and instead all the petals fall.
1282 路 path: See these strange marks in the path? They were made by Yoko Ono’s wooden leg.
1350 絡 entwine: Spiderman and Yoko Ono are so closely entwined in each other’s arms that it’s difficult to see where one starts and the other finishes.
1433 酪 dairy products: Drinking out of a whiskey bottle is Yoko Ono, but she insists it actually contains dairy products.
1624 閣 tower: Yoko Ono opens the gates because she wants to climb the tower inside. OR: You look up at a tower and see Yoko Ono who shouts down asking you to open the gates so she can get out.
2156 咎 reprehend: I reprehend person for knocking Yoko Ono out of the way.
2302 洛 old Kyoto: When she lived in Old Kyoto Yoko Ono had a habit of squirting people with her water pistol.
2545 烙 branding: I brand Yoko Ono and accidentally set her on fire.
2738 賂 graft: I’m involved in graft and give a beautiful seashell to Yoko Ono to try to bribe her.

Thanks delta and katsuo, both very helpful replies.
Katsuo, the detailed breakdown of your stories and their inter-connections is very enlightening and inspiring. After my reviews today I intend to go back over all the kanji that involve 各 with a fresh perspective. At the moment I remember them but without a strong visual story, which I know is not the way forward!

I found "each" to be helpful, because somehow all the stories I made in my head with it stuck for some reason. "Each of those trees was a plum tree"

Plum tree (梅) is tree (木) + every (毎). "Each" & "every" are easily confused, and assigning distinct concrete images can help to avoid such problems.

Haha, I was afraid this was gonna happen. I don't have this problem with the other "each" and "every" Kanji, though. And I think the incident just now will be enough to cement it in my memory, so thanks Smile

This was my problem too.. I was essentially making stores where each was every... Still haven't cracked it. Notice some peeps use walkie talkie or keitai for 各
