But in the election frenzy this has been lost to many ears.
Puerto Rico voted yesterday to try and become the 51st state of the USA. Now a petition(?) will be put to Congress to decide whether it will happen or not.

I find this pretty exciting. I thought I would never actually see a new country become a state and now I just might in my lifetime.

I thought Israel was the 51st state.

Also, not going to happen.

I wonder where we will fit the extra star into the flag?

A 100 star flag would look really crowded...

Doubt we'll ever make it to anything over 60. Our territories are quite few and realistically only a territory is likely to become a state.

I can't wait to see it on the map as a state. It's about time. I would imagine this actually being done by the end of Obama's second term.

Not going to happen without another (conservative) state coming in at the same time.

Republicans dare not shut this down. They took an incredibly hard hit during the election by not having the latino vote. Many knew this going in, but the truth of the reality has shocked many. In some of the states Obama led the latino vote 80 to 20 percent; that's a landslide figure. The republican platform for most latino voters was toxic.

If Puerto Rico is brought before Congress for a vote on statehood and they shoot it down? That will haunt them in the next election. Lets also not forget that the Statehood of Puerto Rico is something that was on both parties platforms:

That came from the 2012 Republican Platform document. The Democrats have something that's almost verbatim.

EDIT: Forgot to add that PR isn't necessarily liberal. They have some liberal and conservative ideas and theres a good change that many will side with Republicans.
