The Failed Avatar Project

#1
I was working on making a new RTK related avatar. I kinda gave up when I realized that our avatars are actually hosted here, you can't direct link to one, and the img tag is disabled for signatures Sad

But, if anyone wants to use it on some other site here it is: http://ruisu.net/rtk.aspx?user=ruisu

Just replace my nickname with yours.

I gave up while it was still looking pretty ugly, but, eh well:

Cool! Something I always wanted to do on this forum is generation of a kanji avatar where the user could pick a kanji, and maybe background/foreground colour/pattern.

I'll look into punBB, there's probably a mod that allows external linking of the avatar. I'm having loads of intermittent disconnections at the moment though Sad

Hmm, no easy way of allowing external URLs.
I found one here, but it disables uploaded avatars, and does a HTTP request to get the image size everytime it displays in the forum, which is quite unefficient. I could display them as CSS background images, cropped, but in theory someone could post image sizes that are too big and slow down the loading of the forum pages. Maybe that's why punBB uses local stored images.

Ohhh, no, I wouldn't want you to start modifying all of that! I was trying to understand the PHP, and was wondering why it disables the on-site avatar. I don't see a column in the database for them. I'm guessing they're in their own table? The HTTP requests to get the dimensions sounds like another problem too...to speed that up maybe you'd have to save the dimensions in their own db columns when the user adds a new image. But in any case, it's more trouble than it's worth!

The Simple API thread sounds like a better recipient of your attention Smile

I wish I could help you out with the dynamic images over here, but I am only a .NET hobbyist. I don't know what I'd do without Intellisense. Lol

Very cool, ruisu! Well, RTKIII sort of breaks the picture (155% of the 常用?), but it's not exactly complete.

Off-topic, but you mentioned signatures. I have User Signatures enabled under my Profile Options, but I have never ever seen a signature on this forum: is that normal?

Ooops, it considers if you're on RTKIII now. But that's awesome, you were off the charts! Hahahah.

If your sig is a picture then it will probably be ignored. Let's see if my sig will show up as text...

It appears the signatures aren't working.

This topic sounds like a bad sci-fi/horror movie.

...or maybe an emo bandname...
