Kindle Manga Formatting

#1
So, I've been reading tons of manga on my recently-purchased Kindle 3. All files I've used this far have required no formatting when it comes to their extensions - I just move them from my PC to the device. Hence, I've used no support applications.

However, something's been bothering me - some images are just a bit larger than the screen, and if the extra whitespace around the frames were removed, they would fit perfectly or near perfectly. For example, I'm reading a chapter of Claymore currently and there's always a centimeter to the left or right that is not shown on the screen - all of it whitespace. Some mangas that have been scanned with a higher resolution have 2+ centimeters of whitespace on each side (especially top/bottom). I remember reading about a piece of software that trims the whitespace off the images, but I don't remember what the name was. I realize the answer is probably some really popular program I'm supposed to know about, but...help?

A lot of image editors can do it. I've only done it in Photoshop, but there are free ones too.
I would Google batch image crop or something and see if you find something useful.

Some more googling gave me a good hit, thanks. Guess I was using the wrong keywords.

Mangle for Kindle?

Actually, I honestly don't remember if that did anything about dead whitespace. Been a while since I used it.

That's what I tried yesterday right after my second post. I like how well it trims the whitespace, but for some reason in all three of my attempts it crashed halfway (meaning 40-60% of the images didn't get edited).

Oh, that sucks. Is it crashing on the same image?

I tried it with two different directories - one being a claymore chapter with med-size images, the other a tsukihime chapter with large images I have to read one fourth at a time. I also changed the setting a bit between attempts (once, I disabled most edit operations, only leaving the whitespace trim and the centering) - it crashed in all three runs. The interesting thing is, it skips some images - I end up with, say, images 2-4, 10-15, 60-78, 125, 129 ignored. I assume it skips the ones it has trouble with and when all that's left are those it skipped, it crashes. I'll have to try running it once until it crashes, and then running it a second time on the images it skipped to be sure.

I'll fiddle with it and/or search for a new program when I'm back home.

IMHO, you're better off getting a Kindle Fire to read manga (or an iPad if you're willing to spend more money).

The iPad Mini is rumored to be released soon.
The press conference is next week.

Also, Amazon is expected to released the Kindle in Japan this month (but I haven't heard anything lately).

The anticipation is killing me. I check the site everyday to see if they announced a release date. I suppose I don't need it immediately as I'm working on a book right now but it'll take some time to get to me anyway. Speaking of, if I live in American and have a friend purchase/send me a Japanese Kindle would I definitely need a Japanese credit card to buy books or could I somehow get Amazon.jp gift cards and then use credit to purchase books?

any word on using the japanese kindle without a japanese credit card?
i have no experience with digital manga reading. what is expected to be the difference in selection on the american kindle fire, the japanese kindle, and the ipad (mini) or other tablets? is it hard to come by older manga? is it hard to find older manga digitally?
i'm not likely to read manga online because of all the distractions of the internet, so i'm keen on some portable alternative. if i'm asking stuff that's been thoroughly covered in threads past, please linklinklinks thanks.
