Here is a conversation started in the JLPT 2007 forum thread but it was getting off topic so I thought I'd give it a new thread.

The gist was how just knowing RTK1, some of the compounds we see can seem pretty funny. I previously wrote "this morning in the bathroom I was reading the label from the can of bathroom deodorizer and saw the kanji 消臭. Instead of thinking しょうしゅう like I would after finishing RTK 2, I think "extinguish stinking." "

To which Decamer0n replied "a little embarassing maybe, but i am curious to know how many others have had their first stunning flash of real-life, real-time heisig applied comprehension involve these two characters on the bathroom deodorizer.

it certainly happened to me. those two innocent kanji, early to arrive in heisig's book, hanging out and clearly marking the bathroom deodorizers sitting quietly in the corners of every japanese bathroom, waiting to catch the unsuspecting eye..."

Anyone else have the "extinguish stinking" experience? Any other funny Heisig readings walking around Japan reading kanji compounds?

Apologies if this thread has happened already (I looked back a few pages in the archives and didn't see one)

For me it was either extinguish stinking or the extinguish fire utensil 消火器 on the fire extinguisher outside my house. I love the 器 kanji now. It made me laugh that you did the same thing with extinguish stinking.

黙認 - This arose from a discussion about pachinko and how people get money for the balls even though it's illegal to gamble (that sentence is a little strange, huh?)
裏切る - I just like it because it's the same in English
被害者 - From Detective Conan, was able to guess it without looking it up. Thanks for the recommendation, whoever recommended Detective Conan. I recommend 浦安鉄筋家族 if you want some fun.

Because those are some interesting examples, I thought I'd pop in some of the Heisig translations:

黙認 (もくにん): silence / acknowledge

There's a medical facility underneath my apartment and for over a year I'd passed by this sign: 泌尿器科　
With Heisig, it makes perfect sense that this is a doctor for urinary organs: ooze / urine / utensil (ひにょうきか)

Can't post any characters from where I am and it's not Japanese-related but I recently came across the Chinese word for 'kangoroo':

DAI-SHU = a rat with a pocket

That would be 袋鼠.
