Heisig lecture and seminars in London

#1
The SOAS Department of the Study of Religions and Centre for the Study
of Japanese Religions are pleased to announce the programme for the
2010-2011 Jordan Lectures, which will be delivered by Professor James Heisig
(Nanzan University).

We hope that those of you who are in the London area will be able to
attend.

School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)
Jordan Lectures 2010-2011
March 10-17, 2011

Inaugural Lecture

Thursday, March 10, 5:00 - 6:30 pm, Khalili Lecture Theatre, SOAS

Nothingness and Desire: A Philosophical Antiphony

In the inaugural lecture, Professor Heisig will lay out the general
outline of an attempt at a conversation with the philosophy of Japan focused on the
mutually defining concepts of desire and nothingness. The overall aim
is to propose an approach that will address both the problem of the
defragmenting of worldviews on postmodern assumptions, and the possibility of a
worldview that reaches beyond philosophies grounded historically in the
Mediterranean basin.

The lecture will be followed by a reception.

Seminars

March 11, 5:00 - 6:30 pm, Room 559 Redefining the
Philosophical Tradition

March 14, 5:00 - 6:30 pm, Room 559 Self

March 15, 5:00 - 6:30 pm, Room V111 God

March 16, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, Room G3 Ethics

March 17, 5:00 - 6:30 pm, Room G3 Property

The seminars will attempt to extend that conversation concretely, and
in a more informal setting, in order to question the longstanding policy of
excluding philosophies of the East and to argue a rethinking of a
number of key notions from a broader perspective.

Please note that all the seminars will be held on SOAS Russell Square
campus but the one on March 15, that will be held at Venron Square Campus. For
further information on the location of SOAS campuses please see http://www.soas.ac.uk/visitors/location/maps/

Ahh that's tomorrow!

Actually doesn't matter, as the subject of the lecture doesn't interest me too much - would be cool to be my copy of RtK signed though!

Too bad I cannot be in London. I would have asked him which kanji has the keyword "antiphony"! And I would have certainly criticized him for "town" and "village"!

It may not sound that interesting thanks to the layers of jargon, but consider this except from the OP:
Lecture Series description Wrote:... to question the longstanding policy of excluding philosophies of the East and to argue a rethinking of a number of key notions from a broader perspective.
Basically, he's going to attack the parochialism of Western philosophy as well as argue that key notions (i.e. fundamental concepts like personal identity, freedom, rights, truth, etc.) need to be revised to take into account non-Western philosophies. Sounds pretty interesting to me.
