Fellows tablets/smartphones users,
I would like to know if there is already any solution for this:
- is it possible to view PDF files with quick access to "rikai-chan"-like functions, i.e. instant dictonary word lookup, by tapping and holding a word?
I'm an iPhone user.
Apple's application, iBooks, is quite good and it has the functions described above when dealing with EPUB files in English.
Although, the instant word lookup function doesn't seem to work on PDF files. In fact, it's not even possible to quick select a japanese word, so we could paste it in a dictonary to search for its meaning/reading.
So, any ideas?
Does anybody else here read japanese books on tablets/smartphones?

iBunko HD is great to read shift-jis or UTF-8 encoded texts in the iPad, and has access to the contents of aozora bunko. In japanese texts encoded in such ways it allows you to select the words you want to look up and calls EBpocket (epwing viewer) or denshi jisho to bring up the definition. Works great with iDict plus and a couple other dictionaries and web sites.
There is an iPhone version as well - iBunko.
Unfortunately I am not sure if that feature would work with PDF files.

Just downloaded iBunko on the iphone and very happy with the app. Question is, how do I get it hooked it up with my dictionary (kotoba) to do quick lookups?
thx

It doesn't work with kotoba, you have to use EBpocket, iDict+ or one of the other ones it works with.

Hello,
I have been using Wakaru (works for the iPad and iPhone). It can read txt file from Azora Bunko and has built-in Japanese-English dictionary (from edict).
It cannot read pdf though (but you can copy and paste pdf to txt file...).

@Blahah Assuming I have one of the dictionaries youre talking about, how would I then go about linking it with my iBunko. Im not too good with the Japanese instructions so please spell it out for me if you dont mind.
@MakiSushi Does the built in dictionary have English translations?

HI All - I know this is a bit later in the convbersation but I have just bought iBunkoHD for ipad. For some reason the dictionary does not seem to work at all - it gives me the option to search the relevant dictionary but then tells me that it cant open the dictionary application...
i could understand if that was for kotoba or ebpocket (which are not part of the original download as far as I can tell) but even the 2 pre-installed japanese-japanese dictionaries will not open.
any thoughts much appreciated.
thanks
