So after rewatching "The Matrix" today in J, I saw that there was a lot of Japanese characters thrown into the "code".

So it got me thinking, what if there was a way to make a screen saver that looped through Japanese characters at random.

Anyone have any ideas?

Great idea, I'll add it to my list of projects to do once my exams finish (5 days time). It's fairly easy to make a screensaver that does that. There could be all sorts of other cool ways of integrating japanese into screensavers, too. If people have any ideas post them and I'll make the best ones.

edit: Just realised I was a bit presumptuous here - if anyone else wants to have a go or wants to team up on making them, that would also be great.

If there's already a screensaver that allows you to input text, then that might be able to work fine.

That said, there's thousands upon thousands of "Matrix Screensaver" programs out there, so it might just be better to make one.

You can easily make cross-platform screensavers by converting video or flash formats. I was planning to make a couple of flash movies which selected kanji from a list of RTK ones and displayed them in various interesting ways. It might be sensible to make it so it can read from a CSV file, so that you could use it to display words or sentences if you wished. That way it also wouldn't be limited to Japanese.

Awesome idea, would be cool seeing random kanji seizure through my pc monitor when I'm not around lol.

I would pay $10 for a Screen saver like that--seriously.

Someone on here made, not a screensaver, but a movie that you can put on which shows each kanji and then a second later the meaning appears. It's in an MPEG-4 format. I did save, but I don't want to post it here without crediting. I know it was made for a French person who was on here, can't remember that person's name either.

I was wrong about that one, unless I missed something, it just customized the top of the screen, some kind of horizontal marquee above the generic Matrix code, and I think the kanji didn't display properly.

Works perfect! You can customize font, font size, colour, speed, # of threads, random characters, multiple colours, and use kanji. Just stick it into your Windows folder (for me).

If you just want to display the RTK kanji one at a time on Mac use can use FadeText screensaver... http://allocsoft.com/fadetext/

The fadetext site also has the files to randomly display EDICT definitions. We could also make one with RTK + Keywords if anyone wants it.

I tried the screensaver in nest0r's last post, and it works great!

Evangelo's referring to the Matrix screensaver I posted in my second comment along with the kanji list, in case anyone got it confused with the first comment I made (which I deleted ;p), as that one didn't work.

Personally I just pasted the 2042 kanji from Bodhi's list rather than all 3007, along with the katakana, since I never encounter enough katakana and the original Matrix font seemed to be reversed katakana or somesuch.

Just an update, I've made a list of RTK Kanji + keyword for use with FadeText (see my post above). Just copy/paste the list from here: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=20tMTEhE into the FadeText settings. I've found having 0 second delays for all settings, the fader speed set at highest, and font size at 144 makes for the best display.

I dug around for a few minutes but didn't find anything -- maybe someone else will have better luck. Has anybody located a Windows counterpart to FadeText? While not exactly the original topic goal, it does sound pretty amusing.

Actually the Matrix one doesn't show the characters individually, it strings them together with slight variations in speed and suchlike (but you can still tell it to show them randomly or in order), even with the most minimal settings. It's just that I'm thinking it can't be that big a deal for anyone if it doesn't show them individually, if they just want a simpler kanji loop as a screensaver (simpler than the Matrix 'rain' that's the default).

If it's some kind of simple marquee or flaschard-like individual kanji/word cycle someone wants, I'm surprised there aren't a tonne out there.

The matrix-esque one is pretty fun to play with though, I was just thinking of a more flash-cardy implementation such as the one linked from the FadeText website.

Both of the ones Blahah linked got close, but neither seemed to deal with foreign characters well (sjis or utf8), nor did they seem to have any randomization. I'll keep poking around later; this would be fun to set up at work.

Yes I realised that was what the Matrix one did, it emulates the Matrix rain after all. There are surprisingly few which will show items from a list randomly, and most marquee ones are limited to <100 characters.

I've got mine showing compounds, but it only puts one on the screen at a time. It would be nice to have them layered all over the screen with a new one added every x seconds in varying sizes. There's a screensaver in the Xscreensavers pack called FontGlide which does exactly this, but it doesn't work with non-western characters. There's also a great one called Xmatrix which is very similar to the windows one you posted nest0r, but for linux and mac. Unfortunately that also doesn't work with non-western characters.

They are open source so there's potential to modify them to work with Japanese encoding.

So those who are using it, what font are you using for the Matrix screensaver? I've only tested Meiryo and MS PMincho and Arial so far (sticking with Arial), and I couldn't get the Epson fonts to work properly (they looked glitchy) and I think some other .jp fonts are not showing up in the settings... (stuff from: http://www.wazu.jp/gallery/Fonts_Japanese.html)

Looks awesome though, I keep 'previewing' my screensaver and flashing back to when I thought kanji were exotic scratchings (probably the same reason the Matrix folks used mirror katakana in the 'code' and people get hanzismatter-mocked kanji tattoos).

I booted windows to test it and it's really nice. I tried a few fonts and came back to Arial, too. Gonna have to make a mac one.
