Are there any good Japanese karaoke or bemani software for PC that are well-supported?

By "well-supported", I mean that people on the internet are constantly releasing song packs with the latest Japanese songs (with Japanese lyrics).

Either karaoke software, a software plugin (for ex. Winamp) or a video game (kind of like Singstar) would be great. Even better if it is available for Mac or Linux. And also would be great if it had pitch detection to ensure that you are singing at the correct pitch.

What are your recommendations?

Unfortunately, AFAIK there isn't a way to have it display Japanese characters, but if you don't mind using romaji you can get lots of Japanese songs -mainly from anime.

Considering how cheap karaoke is here, I doubt there is much of a community for releasing timed lyrics for people to use on their computer.

You should just settle for untimed lyrics displayed in your mp3 player.

I will try this on my home theatre and my 40 inch LCD TV with a microphone. If it works, there will be a BYOB party at my place very soon

Thank you so much, Sebastian, for providing this link! I haven't had so much fun playing a video game since DDR! This program rocks! Currently I have a couple of Gackt songs (whom I just love) and I'm singing along with him in a state of complete Japanese-learning/J-rocker bliss!

unfortunately the current version of Ultrastar Deluxe doesn't support foreign character sets, so all the japanese songs are in romaji.... but the next major release is supposed to have support for Japanese characters.
