Offline. Monolingual. Dictionaries.

#1
Does anybody know of any *reliable*, offline, electronic, monolingual dictionaries? I've been considering getting rid of internet access at my house so that i can be more productive while studying offline.

I have a wordtank, but radical searching and attempting to write in the kanji is literally a nightmare; I'd like one that i can use on my computer and while copying and pasting words and definitions...and stuff. I was thinking something similar to that Tagaini Jisho thingy, but monolingual. Yeah...googling has left me in the dark in regards to this, so any help would be appreciated....

漢字のそのまま楽引辞典 is on the Nintendo DS and allows for searching by writing the Kanji.
I think it works amazingly well. See at: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-9g-4...-198v.html

As much as I love my 漢字のそのまま楽引辞典 on the Nintendo DS, I've found quite often that it doesn't have certain specific words, so I still end up using an online dictionary quite often.

Wouldn't a wordtank be superior to a DS in terms of vocab and ways to look up a kanji? (though I don't know what kind you have, but still)

As for your offline dictionary, you might wanna try JEDict or Kanji Go, I don't know if they support lookup by writing the kanji though.

There are epwing format dictionaries of monolinguals like 大辞林 (the one used by sanseido and goo) on demonoid if you have an account there. Heres some more info and viewers if you dont already have one http://www.hloeffler.info/epwing/epwing_format.html

Exactly, that's what I use for offline dictionaries. I didn't have to have a demonoid account randomly (that site confuses me).

Of course, if you are opposedto downloading things, you have to buy the dictionary, so you might as well get a paper one or one of those electronic dictionaries.

I second that. 95% of the time I can find exactly what I'm looking for in under 10 seconds. Wouldn't go without it.

Yeah sometimes it lets me download without an account, and sometimes not. It won't let me at the moment. But if you search "demonoid + *your search term*" (ie. "demonoid 大辞林") you may find that google cache is your friend, hint hint nudge nudge Wink

Yeah, it's a lot of them and some are quite big, but any good torrent program will let you pick what to download and it's not like you need a lot of them. I think 大辞林 is less than 600MB.

Does anyone know of an epwing reader for linux that actually works?

Ebview works perfectly, it's just a bit hard to add dictionaries to it.

I picked up an import copy of 三省堂国語辞典 4th Edition from Amazon. It's not let me down yet and I find having a paper dictionary actually helps me remember words better when I read the definitions (there is no temptation to use Rikai-chan, etc.).
However maybe I am taking the "offline" part a bit too literally with this recommendation.

Personally I wouldn't recommend a paper dictionary. It just takes WAY too long to search in it so it hinders your efficiency. If you need a mobile dictionary, an electric one is probably better (especially one which can work with EPWING so you can get hold of the good dictionaries online if they do not come with the 電子辞書). It's also a lot more mobile than a huge paper dictionary.

Perhaps one might get lucky if one would search EPWING on btcomic.net, PERHAPS.

And thank you for your help. After a bit of googling and looking at that link, I think I finally understand how all this works. I got an EPWING format dictionary reader thing (EBWin), and now I'm getting 大辞林. Thanks.

"Yeah sometimes it lets me download without an account, and sometimes not. It won't let me at the moment. But if you search "demonoid + *your search term*" (ie. "demonoid 大辞林") you may find that google cache is your friend, hint hint nudge nudge wink"

If it keeps asking you to register an account its because you're clicking on the actual page link. Instead you want to be looking at the google cache of that page, which you should be able to access. Underneath the result you should see something saying "cached". Click this.

EDIT: Ooops, I posted this in the wrong thread. Sorry guys. Sad
