Hey all, thought I'd ask for a group effort similar to when Sentences were entered for KO2001. Anyway, it's creating item lists on iKnow using the Kanji.Odyssey word list as a guide.

Reason? After being reminded about how well KO2001 is laid out by Ghizindra, well, KO2001 has a better list for learning systematically. So, use the more efficient list of KO2001 with the superior Sentence/Image/Audio mix of iKnow.

What to do: volunteer here to do multiples of 15 kanji. You'll set up a list, enter the words in order, then add sentences using iKnow's provided material (preferable one with audio sentences with photos). Please don't enter in the sentences from KO2001.

As ~500 vocabulary words get entered, I'll create a merged list and post the links here. Ultimately I think there should be ~5000 vocabulary words which means 10 large lists.

That sounds like a great project and I'm looking forward to the lists. I don't have KO2001, is there a way I can help without having the books?

this is kinda what i was thinking of doing NukeMarine... I'll look at your lists later today... does this include all of the readings of every 常用　kanji or only some of them? kanji odyssey is a CD also wccrawford... i'm sure you could help out but ask nukemarine if you can...

I'm just using the four or five vocabulary words that are listed by each kanji in the two books. With that, it seems reasonable that you'll need the books or a vocabulary list based off the books to input these.

It is a bit time consuming, but not much so. I think this could be done in week given enough interest and effort.

A similar list could be put together for Kanji in Context vocabulary listings truth be told.

What exactly is the advantage of this? I've been doing iknow sentences the past couple weeks but I'm still only on lesson 2. I thought one of the main advantages of iknow was that its lessons are i+1? Wont you be losing that if you do this? Doesn't that just leave you with the same problem that the kanji odyssey sentences have?

Great idea Nuke! This will definitely help with studying both of those sources.

Also, anyone have any idea why I can't access the second set? I went and checked out the first set just fine (good job, by the way!), but it won't let me access the second set. It says I don't have access to the page, or: ごめんなさい！このページへはアクセスできません。

Fortunately I just bought a copy of KO2001 book 1 today, and have been doing iKnow for a couple of weeks! So happy to help out...

I've created a list for 91-105, http://www.iknow.co.jp/lists/43955. I copied, and changed for the appropriate kanji, the title, description and tags you're using. I'm not sure about the process for adding the sentences though. I can add the words easy enough, using the add items, and can get a list of sentences for that item.

What criteria are you using to choose which sentences to add though? Ones that cover all the readings for that kanji? All the available sentences? A select few?

So, one sentence for each vocab word for each kanji, from the original cerego list?

Edit 2: But some of the vocab words have no sentences on iKnow, such as 東日本. What do you reckon, just leave these words off the list? Try to source a sentence w/ audio from outside iKnow?

i'm getting the same message now "ごめんなさい！このページへはアクセスできません。" for both lists... maybe they are doing maintenance or Nukemarine is getting in trouble hehe. I'll try to contribute with the lists too... put me down for 91-105

You can get the second list by following a link from the first one - on the recent lists box on the left-hand side.

I bought a copy of KO2001 recently. I'd be willing to help.

I'm not sure what to do though. I don't use iKnow.

Yeah, I was basically asking if someone had that list that I could work from. If I bought the book at this point, I doubt it would be here in time to help as they say it'll be a day or 2 before it ships, and then about a week after that until it arrives. I can't find it from anyone that will ship it quickly. (That I normally deal with... Haven't tried any new places.)

I'm already deeply embedded in my own KO/iKnow method (KO vocab dictation/iKnow sentence recognition), but when I don't look at it from a selfish perspective I realize how helpful this project will be to people--rather than searching for the relevant kanji in lowkey/zorts' iKnow Anki decks and unsuspending as one goes, that is (I'm didn't do that, but I would have recommended it to others before realizing how limited that is). So smart move, Nuke, vos, etc. I can tell you that there's already plenty of overlap that I've been loving, but I probably got lucky with the timing, with even more structure this is definitely something worthwhile.

You could probably do Books 3+4 on there too, no? I'll see if I can't contribute to that next month. Or perhaps Coscom themselves would be interested in getting involved with iKnow for books 3+4, like some of those jpop artists are (from what I read on iKnow's blog). Though I'm not sure if they'd feel it was worthwhile.

Edit: So basically haha, I just realized even though resolve already wrote the import plugin and Nukemarine's been going on about the API, iKnow is like an Anki deck building/distribution system for multimedia sentences. Pretty cool.

Hey vosmiura, thanks for clearing that up! That link works perfectly for me. Also, I didn't even think about searching, haha. Probably because I haven't used the iKnow site so much myself.

So my question to all of you is this: What do you think of using iKnow's sentences to learn the reading for the Kanji Odyssey kanji? I mean, sure it's using their organization (which is great), but don't you think a little bit of the effect is lost when it comes to the sentences, as KO's sentences usually pack more than one reading in to each one? Or do you think the audio/pictures in the iKnow sentences more than make up for this?

Sorry, I just woke up and have to go to work right now. I'll look over the added effort in about 4 hours if my computer at work can access it.

For words with no sentences, first check "popular" then "search". It seems that a lawernia added KO sentences, so you may be able to use those. In addition, Cerego has English to Japanese lists (no audio though) that may be available. If neither, just leave the word without a sentence.

I'll rechange the links on the first post to go to the list tab of the lists (where all words are listed).

I think, if there's room, I'll do groups of 100 kanji for the larger merged lists.

i pretty much copied your style Nukemarine... both of my lists should match up to yours...
making these lists will be great for when i get my iphone too though... i could throw these into anki and have the extra audio i agree with you too, the learning style of KO2001 is much more systematic in it's approach... it's nice being able to deal with the same kanji for awhile before random sets are thrown in... the downside though is while we will learn kanji perfectly we are leaving out words that don't involve kanji, mimetic words, and katakana words... of course i would like to learn all of the kanji before i tackle course 6000 and 10000 of iKnow whenever it comes out...

With iKnow, it tracks your word progress, so duplicates on other lists are ignored. So, should you do all or even half of KO, you can start iKnow Core and find 80% of your work already done.

In addition, if you saw my spreadsheet for iKnow core that you can use to import to anki, Just set the "vocabulary" word portion to be unique and you can bulk import KO lists, having all learned words weeded out.

It's win/win, just with a lot of up front work making it all usuable.

What I've decided (personal reasons) is that there's a slight flaw in the sentence method. Mainly, you sometimes have a i+2 or i+3 or more in some of the ones you add.
Personally, this created a problem as I could mark a sentence wrong for any number of words. Now, you can correct this by making sure ONLY one new word is in the sentence (impossible, or you start off VERY, VERY basic).

The other way, which I figured out with iKnow, is to let that sentence represent one vocabulary word. KO2001 actually had this set-up, as the vocabulary was on the side plus they pointed it out in the sentences. We just ignored it when we typed up the spread sheet. So, if you use KO sentences (which are better than iKnow Core, but lack images and audio readings), just bold or set off to the side the word the sentence is there to teach. If there's two words, then use the sentence twice, once per each word. From here on out, how well you do with that vocabulary word determines if you got the sentence right. Make sense?

Hashiriya, yeah, go for it.

Personally (in Anki) I consider the sentence one whole entity. It doesn't matter if there's 2 or even 3 words in it I don't know, I need to understand them ALL to complete the sentence. It's just a good thing.. instead of learning just 1 word for each sentence, I learn more. If you for some reason have trouble doing this, I guess the failing might be annoying and cause a lot of extra reviews... but personally I can quite easily do it without failing cards, so I'm simply learning more without getting any higher workload.
