I used assimil as my first text book and loved it.
However, I would recommand _not_ to practise writing before the book teach how to write kana (in my edition, this is start at lesson 57) , in order not get bad habits (stroke order are important, and if you get used to a wrong one, it s going to be difficult to unlearn it).
