Honestly, I feel that a lot of learners feel that it's either too difficult, too time-consuming (lol) or doesn't actually teach Japanese. The various hate I've seen for it seems to stem from the fact that people study it before actually studying any grammar/vocab.
I find it weird that people would bash a learning method but it happens so often (Genki or bust, learning Japanese from anime is the worst, etc.) If it works for that person then that's the best method. Over time they will find methods that work for them and discard what doesn't.
