Agreed. Some of this shades into 'preferred learning approaches' too -- I like to build up a kind of 'scaffolding' by working on an intellectual understanding of things like grammar, verb endings, etc, and then building up the intuitive actually-know-the-language understanding over time with the aid of the scaffolding, so that's what I tend to recommend.
