Thanks for emphasizing there's so many subs for the 2009 releases. Haven't kept up with jdorama, but decided to experiment with subs2srs strategy phase 02 right away, will be using these.

Quick dufus question - I've looked around a bit, but I can't seem to figure out how or where to get the ripped, closed caption subs. I'm almost positive someone mentioned it recently (IceCream, mebbe?) but I've come up empty handed. If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd ruv roo rong time*! *(void where prohibited, some restrictions may apply)

I'd love to know the answer to this too. I think I need to streamline my method of sentence extraction. Right now, I'm using Subs2SRS on the entire episode, without any inclusion or exclusion, except for words that are shorter than 4 characters long. I then manually go through the deck one card at a time and delete the ones I don't feel are useful.

Unfortunately, this takes a while, since there's about 400 cards to go through on average. Definitely need to improve on this method.

Don't bother setting out to do it. Just start working through the deck and hit the delete button when one comes up. Doing it this way will take you virtually no extra time.

my advice is to SRS the whole conversation instead of SRSing 1 or 2 sentences.
Conversation tend to build off of the previous sentences.


When I say "whole conversation" it's up to you to decide what that means.
For me, it often means either a chance of scenery or a change in subject matter.

After I make my PDF. I read through the script with a highlight and then save all the conversations that have sentences/vocab that I highlighted.

When I review, I annotated the conversation with references to the grammar books I have. For example, if とする is used in a conversation. I find the places in my grammar books that refer to とする. Also, I highlight all particles and reference them to "All About Particles".

In fact, it probably wouldn't be that hard to search for JLPT grammar as well (just time consuming).

It's not that I like it, it's that that's what I've been doing which worked well for building my listening comprehension when I use my iPod (and later reading comprehension speed). Not so much sentence mining as complete self translation / comprehension of the episode.

Your way sounds much, much better for true sentence picking via subs2srs. Getting 20 to 30 choice clips per episode and going through many episodes makes for a refreshing review process. Some of the really boring monologue bits (review perspective) from "5cm per Second" makes me appreciate what you suggest even more.

To be fair though, I'm limited only to what I had downloaded last year (2008). With low bandwidth, one sometimes has to be creative with resources at hand. Once that problem is removed next summer (ie move back to Japan), then sentence picking many different episodes might be in the cards for me.

And yeah, editing the subs file ahead of time makes for a smoother process. Even better given the accurate timing of recent subs.

Each year it gets better. Some good thoughts, thanks for the cpl responses, representing I think 80% of the self-studiers using subs2srs regularly (or studying in a subs2srs-like way). ;p

Originally I was going to do full episodes of stuff for quite a while before collapsing it all into pure extemporaneity, but like Nukemarine mentioned, some new resources, plus frankly some boredom and my ability to DL stuff easily, has prompted me to move my schedule ahead. Also inspired myself with my talk of the values of kanji, hehe. Totally revamped how I view literacy in Japanese.

At any rate, I was going to 'design' where I could a minimum of 50 cards per episode, just to make the bandwidth/conversion process worthwhile and also to ensure I had a sizeable corpus of jmedia to reflect back on, but of course I wouldn't 'force' more cards than necessary.

Oooh, Tokyo Dogs, that's a funny show once it gets going. I always cringe when during dramas, at the beginning or the end, Character A goes abroad to America or Europe where they *really* know how to to X--where X is Serious Business™. A kind of modern variation of 'akogare no Paris' I suppose.

Anyone else unable to get the Buzzer Beat .jp subs to work in subs2srs?

Damn. That thread seems to suggest it's something to do with the encoding. Maybe there's a way to convert to srt (and convert language in the process)--n/m, ssa is fine in subs2srs, guess I'll try the method in the thread.

Yuss! Okay, just open in Word (or OpenOffice, etc.) with Chinese EUC encoding. Then save as .txt (I didn't have to check any of that stuff that came up before saving), and rename back to .ssa. Simplified EUC didn't work for the finale, had to use Chinese 'Auto-select' instead (edit: Correction, saving that one with EUC after opening w/ Auto-select did work).

I know what you mean. I forgave it once the main character started poppin knee caps, though. Apparently American law officers are cold, hilariously violent, and always take calls from their semi-naggy mothers, even a tough situation. 2 out of 3 ain't bad

This show seemed like it was intended to be one thing and then at the last moment someone changed stuff around to make it more "pure." I was gonna clown this show, but I just finished reading parts of the novel that it's based on. This show, strangely, is much much better. I don't know how that novel even became well known. It literally made my brain hurt.

BTW: What happened to the last few episodes of Samurai High School?

I'm watching "My Girl" and it's a pretty awesome show. I was somewhat depressed today, so it made me feel better. I can understand it enough that I don't feel entirely lost. I would say maybe 20-25%. It's great to feel some sense of improvement after just trying to watch Liar Game and becoming completely lost (especially since it had no Japanese subs).

Makes me hope I can have such a cute daughter in the future. Although she'd only be half-Japanese. I do get annoyed at some of the stupid mistakes he makes, but then he makes up for them. I highly recommend it, and I'm only on the 3rd episode.

Also this is just a helpful bump for a useful thread. I wish you'd maybe rate some older ones too.

P.S. If anybody has Japanese subs for Hana Yori Dango 1 and 2 I'd greatly appreciate it. I have a set of subs for HYD 1, but I'm not too fond of the font that the subtitles use, as it does not stick out. HYD 2 I have absolutely no subs.
