Making Out In Japanese

#1
Now, now, now, boys and girls, it's the name of a book, and a handy one at that.
I dismissed it at first, thinking the sentences were too short and, being an RTK addict, didn't have enough kanji to sink my teeth into.

Six months later I flipped through it again on the library shelves. Wow! Every time I recognized a sentence I thought: "Yeah, that's a handy sentence," "yeah, that one's good too." Then it dawned on me. If all the sentences I recognized were handy dandy sentences, maybe the rest were useful too. A Japanese friend flipped through it and confirmed they are all common, casual, natural sentences.

I began putting them into Anki and the payback was immediate. Everything from 何も言ってないよ to もういいよ to 電話してもいい and ほかに彼女ができた。I began to hear these exact sentences over and over in movies, doramas and anime. There's close to 1,000 sentences (rough estimate), and each a snapshot of Japanese as it's actually spoken. The sentences cover food, drink, cursing and even, yes, making out. It's a great collection of everyday phrases.

As a comparison, while I'm a big fan of All About Particles, and have many of those sentences in Anki, I have yet to hear anyone say 象は鼻が長いです.

If you're interested in anything with spoken Japanese, give it a shot. メッチャメッチャ好き。
