The same could be said for English spelling. Or pronunciation. (I should take a video of my poor wife attempting to say "otolaryngologist").
These kind of segments are pretty common. Mainichi Shinbun runs a whole sub-site devoted to kanji knowledge: http://www.mainichi-kotoba.jp/. Probably a good thing, given the deterioration of general knaji knowledge. (My wife took one look at 靴箆 and declared, "「箆」は書けない!".)
It may be my imagination, but there seem to be a lot more of these knowledge-oriented shows and segments on Japanese history than on American TV. It's not hard to just watch a few select hours of TV here and there and pick up a lot of information about Japanese history and culture.
