A short update:
Today (May 6, 2013) I've completed my first review from memory of all 3,036 characters. Results:
Total: 1847 correct (60.83%), 1189 missed (39.13%). This includes Biang3, which I wrote correctly.
For RTH Book 1: 1044 correct (69.6%), 456 missed (30.4%)
For RTH Book 2: 803 correct (52.27%), 733 missed (47.72%)
Important note: I continued studying the characters during the review process. When I got a character wrong, I would review it in my list of stories, but in addition, I looked at the characters that came right before it and right after it (e.g. if I got #1505 wrong I would look at #1504 and #1506). This definitely helped me during the review process, since if it weren’t for that extra review, I would have gotten a lot more characters wrong. Indeed, I did better at review as I went along. After reviewing my first 1503 characters, I was at 843 correct and 660 incorrect (56.08%). Since then I went 1,004 and 529 (65.49%)
I did considerably better in Book 1 than I did in Book 2, probably for a number of reasons. First, I’ve learned about 560 characters from my college Chinese class, and the vast majority of those characters were from Book 1. Having to study those characters for class definitely helped me during the review process. Second, I had already done some review of those characters after finishing the first book. Third, the characters in book 1 are generally simpler, and also serve as the building blocks of the Book 2 characters – so in studying Book 2, you do a considerable amount of study of the Book 1 characters. That’s one reason why I decided to finish both books before doing my first extensive review.
I suppose now I'll alternate between re-reviwing characters I missed and reviewing characters I got successfully.
