You don't need to be in contact with someone you used to know, to know they're fine. If they weren't fine, you'd hear about it from shared acquaintances.

There are dozens of people I haven't talked to in decades, about whom I know for a fact that they're alive...just by virtue of the fact that no one ever called to tell me they died. If someone does die, I invariably hear about it.

Perhaps if you weren't on some kind of spectrum you'd know how these things work.
