I see what you mean with potplayer. Prior to today, I didn't even know the tool could even play video files. I was personally using it more like an interactive audiobook. In regards to video, I might just use potplayer but I would still use the tool for when I want listening/shadowing practice with audio only.

It can also have two different languages (soft-subtitles) on display, just change the settings -- Preferences (F5) // Subtitles // Language/Sync/Other

and if the video have hard-subtitles, then that will be three languages at the same time.

I tried the audio recording feature but the problem is when you just want to record a few specific lines from the subtitle browser it never works very well. It always misses the first half of the sentence, whether you set it to Auto record on play start or not. Then you also have to stop the recording, which is a whole other click. Won't somebody please think of the clicks!

I just think being able to right click > export subtitle audio from the subtitle browser would be a super elegant solution.

Potplayer is cool.  I finally have another option besides MPC for watching subtitled stuff and adjusting it realtime.

First time I hear about Potplayer. Is it any better than VLC when it comes to adjusting off-sync subtitles? You have to hold down the button for quite a bit with VLC if the subs are off for more than a second or two.

Also, do you guys know if it allows you to adjust subs that are way off sync, like a full min or so? I tried watching an anime the other day, but the first episode was impossible to sync because the subs were 80 seconds off as a result of skipping the intro.

You can find the start of a line and then sync that subtitle to that point for the rest of the subtitles.  You could do the same thing with MPC.  The two subtitles at once are the main bonus for me over MPC, it's hard to watch stuff with other people with just one soft sub.

EDIT: More detailed instructions:
Subtitles > Browse Subtitles
Pause the video at the start of a spoken line
Find the line in the browser and click Reset entire sync to the selected position
Repeat after commercial breaks if there are any

I find it a lot more convenient than typing in trial and error numbers or opening Aegisub.

simply Right-Click and select
Subtitles /
Subtitles Sync /
0.5 Sec faster (short-cut keys > or .)
0.5 Sec slower (short-cut keys < or ,)

OR

For constant delay throughout the whole video
Subtitles /
Subtitles Sync /
Adjust Subtitle Sync
Input "the difference in milliseconds"
either in positive/negative value according to the audio sound for your video
Click Apply
Click OK

IF it is more of the progressive delay type,
or there are commercial breaks in the video which is different from another video file,
then it is advisable to use subtitles editor tools (e.g. Aegisub) to re-time and adjust them.

I did not encounter such problem.

There is a possibility that the subtitle file (you have) is being timed without any lead/lag time, and hence the "problem" of always misses the first half of the sentence, whether the Auto record on play start is set or not.

If the "time delay" (i.e. without lead-time in this situation) is constant throughout the video, Aegisub can re-adjust them.

Select all the rows OR the affected rows,
Click Timing / select Shift Times
Input the (Shift By) "time difference required"

Select Forward to Backward accordingly
@ Select "Backward" in this situation to create lead-time for the subtitle file

[Affect]
All rows
Selected rows
Selection onward
@ Click on one of the buttons according to your requirement and selected lines

[Times]
Start and End Times
Start times only
End times only
@ Click on Start Times only in this situation to create lead-time for the subtitle file

What is the time length of those subtitle lines that are being exported?  
Less than One Second?

If the subtitle file have 1000 lines, what is the average number of lines being extracted?

Subtitles file that are exactly timed to the video material are mostly made by fan-subbers.

Unless you are part of their fansub team and working alongside with them, the chances of finding exactly timed subtitle file to video material in the public domain are pretty slim.

It may be better to learn how to use Aegisub or similar subtitles editor tools for re-adjusting of subtitle file to exactly match the video file you have in such situation, because different people may use different players, on different screen sizes, different resolution rate, different end-users, different usage purposes, and so forth.

I don't think the subtitle timing is related to the audio recording problem. It's supposed to just record whatever audio is played after hitting the play button. I hear the entire audio just fine when I do hit play, it's just the output file has a portion of the start cut out every time.

Hmm... that's strange. I can't figure it out why the audio output file has "cut-off portion" at the start-time in your situation.  Anyway, it works nicely at my end.

I've never used this software, but perhaps it's related to some kind of buffer..? You might want to try finding the buffer settings to see if different values affect the amount of time cut off the start.

I thought that might have been the reason myself, but I tried the file in different players and even in foobar with the buffer set to the lowest it goes it still gave the same result.

UPDATE: I just tried a different show and it seems to work fine with it.

UPDATE 2.0 - THE UPDATENING: So I noticed it was working when the format was set to .ogg, which I don't remember setting it to, so I switched it to .mp3 to see if that would make a difference—and it did. Turns out the problem only occurs when I try to save the file as a .mp3.

Good to know it's working fine, at last. Thanks for the updates too. I get to learn something new as well.

Almost one second of audio was "shave-off" in the MP3 compared to the OGG from your sample files.

Just a bit curious...
Is the UPDATE 1 "different show" encoded with OGG, AAC, AC3 or MP3 format?
