Anyway, just wanted to contribute to this thread something I found interesting.

There is a domain on the alljapaneseallthetime.com server (registered Jan 03 2015) called mindfud.com. It's a simple Wordpress site using elements from the same theme that AJATT is running. Mindfud is a signup form for a "Quick and Dirty [...] Executive Book Summary". The site is run by "your Uncle Jay Jones".

I'm not sure what conclusion should be drawn from this, if any.

I've been registered but have been a lurker on the forums as well.

I checked it out. It's too similar in tone/style/interest areas. I don't know what that means either, although I'm guessing....

I don't know anything about this, but after reading that Nazi joke, I'm about 99% positive it was written by Khatz.

Honestly, I'd rather not know of Khatzu's whereabouts than see something like this. A lot of the ideas and motivation in my own learning came from AJATT and this forum.

I hear you. AJATT and this forum revolutionized my language learning style and motivation as well. For a while I was one of those Kool-aid drinking AJATTeers, but the fair and honest criticism I found on this forum snapped me out of it.

AJATT is full of positive ideas and motivation. It's important to note that the un-positive aspects don't make the ideas/motivation less valid than they were before.

I know some people here has criticized him in the past, at times with reason, but I recognize the importance his blog had for me so I am grateful to him and I hope he is fine

On a sidenote, why are all those japanese blog trying to sell material, which is a good thing I think, but none of them has ads? I used to have a non-language related blog on the past and I remember I gained a good amount thanks to adsense so I wonder why koohii and other well-known websites didn't have them. Do things have changed in the last years?

I bet if you are blogging about learning a language, creating material to teach the language is a logical direction to go.

I bought Khatz's "My First Sentence Pack" years ago. If I remember, it was $35. It makes sense why he'd create and sell study material. If I had the skill to make something like that, I think it would have been an enjoyable and profitable experience.

Anyway, I guess the next question is this: does anyone think Khatz will rise up again like a phoenix, or has he forever turned his back on being an internet personality?

Uhm... well maybe you had a blog that hit a really popular keyword or just lucked out on the SEO? I don't know what you mean by good amount but when I tried adsense on this forum, the ads were completely irrelevant for the most part and I earned like 15 USD a month...

Advertising revenue, from what I hear actually gets worse and worse. The clickthrough rate is extremely low, and particularly on websites such as this as you can imagine with a fairly computer literate audience that knows how to block ads

Direct advertising is probably the best adveritsing I can get since it's actually relevant and useful products, and the audience is the right one.

Affiliates.. well I have had some suggestions now and then but most I have seen have pitiful commissions, the kind of commissions that work on a highly succesful blog that pulls hundred thousands views. Not so great for a web app and a relatively small forum. Besides commissions tend to work with lots of SEO and lots of link placement etc.

God bless JapanesePod101, seriously.. their commissions are amazing compared to other affiliates. I think it's 25% ? I don't know what I would do without them.

It certainly is shocking. It's kind of sad to see someone who had promoted so many good ideas disappear for that extended amount of time (come to think of it, many of the people here who contributed so much to Japanese learning are no longer active, I think). I guess people move on, and that's natural, but sad all the same.

But seeing a domain like the one mentioned above really leaves a bad aftertaste, you know, that the person who has inspired me a lot maybe involved in something like this. I wasn't a Kool-aid drinker by any means, but most of his philosophy, as well as ideas from this forum, Tadoku, and comprehensible input, have formed the backbone of my time spent learning Japanese.

@CreepyAF: I definitely get what you mean about walking away with the positive aspects, exercising good judgement, and not letting the negative affect the positive. I'm not doing that, and I still owe a lot to the AJATT blog. It's just.......ó__ò

There are some TkyoSam videos with Khatz discussing his methods. I'm guessing those are the same ones that were previously posted.

I think the notion that Khatz is also Pikachuxxx/Pakapa is mostly a joke, though it certainly seems that he wrote the content on her site.

I understand. For some reason I have a lot of nostalgia for the site and Khatz. There is a certain glowing fondness of AJATT circa 2006 - 2010 that feels tainted now.

I understand, so it is probably related to the topic you discuss. As you said it depends much on the audience too. I imagine those blogs about diets, cellulite and how to build muscles get more clicks xD

Also the JPod101 I think it is not even "advertising" but more as a service, because it is a valid product and it is related to what we study. It's nothing you can click by mistake or because you're deceived. I hope they will do less dialog-oriented material in the future, and more of the podcast thing with "real" content about japanese food and the like xD

Same here. Although I suspect it's largely due to his tone changing (the "mom" and "hooker" jokes, which were quite frankly a major turn off.) Maybe it's just me.

I still liked the site a whole lot, though, and I still do. It'll be a loss if the domain expires on Friday.
