This is how I learn, I don't use SRS. As for not remembering words you learn, the test comes when I see it again. If I remember it, I'm good. If I don't, I'll look it up again and have a better chance...

が is acting in both sentences as 'but'. The の just adds an explanatory nuance. Both sentences are fine.
