Eventually the story sticks. Is this bad? If it doesn't stick near enough first time does that mean I will forget it in the future? I presume I am eventually just memorising the stories.

Sometimes I have bad days where I fail lots of cards I shouldn't, I usually just stop reviewing and come back to it later and it often solves the problem.

I have the same problem, if I slow down then the most recently learned 50 kanji escape from my head. My fail pile is always between 30 and 50 characters, and I am up to 950 now.
