So... wouldn't it have just been easier to explain this instead of saying that you don't see why I would think it sounds as if there are more than 5 vowels in Japanese?

I suspect that by the time you finish your PhD, the urge to party, especially 2 times a week, will be well out of your system. If not, you'll have a hard time getting that PhD.

Like most have said. The longer you allow yourself hear, read, and use Japanese the easier it will be to think in Japanese. Pretty simple. But it takes time.
