^Thats OK if you are in Japan and can talk to people. Immersion works even before 6000 words. But I dont think that you will learn very much vocab just by passively listening to Japanese.

I found data from the COCA. The 20000th lemma (head word) has a frequency just less than 1 in a million. Except for manatee (?) they are all really normal words that you know exactly what they mean. ...

I dont think it will be easy to start going without. Even when you are listening again without reading you dont really have to hear the words. The sounds are just cueing your memory of what you read b...

I see why I was confused now the passive and potential conjugation are the same. Maybe I should have worded it like, 借りられなかった can mean was borrowed (by someone).
