Learning a few of them through rote is fine. The SRS won't fail you if you keep up with reviews every day. Learning all of them through rote is kind of crazy.

Either use ANKI or this site for kanji. Do not use both, it is a waste of time. My advice is to try to make Heisig and RevTK a daily habit. It won't be that beneficial if you keep it to weekends only...

Kanken 1 tests approximately 6000 kanji, but many Japanese people can't even pass that. The 3000ish in Kanken pre-1 is probably a good estimate for modern literacy.
