Yes I agree it's better to learn them in context. I find it gives the brain something to 'hook' the word onto so to speak. I use Genki and I find that the exercises help me to actively use the vocab...

I have Japanese the Manga way and I read through the whole thing after finishing RTK 1+3 and prior to starting Genki 1. It's a great primer if read from front to back and also a great reference book....
