It's an indicator of how good the mnemonic will work. You know if a story has a lot of upvotes AND reports then you're likely to not forget it.

You shouldn't stop learning kanji, you should just stop learning them individually. Learn them with words. Tae Kim uses kanji in his guide, you could just read through that.

From the small amount of Chinese I learned I would say pronunciation is a lot more difficult than tones. There are plenty of sounds that aren't in English that are in Chinese.
