There are some legit criticisms of Heisig's RTK, however almost all of those criticisms deal only with the book and most if not all are corrected thanks to online sites and communities like RevTK. Ed...

The stronger your base (kanji, grammar, vocab), the easier it is to dive into things you like. However, as you notice, it'll still take work but in the end you'll likely have cemented the use of Japan...
