I've also heard 申し訳ございません several times, so it DOES exist. May sound a bit over-polite though, that might be the reason why it's not as common as 申し訳ありません, so you'll likely only use it in super formal...

Another good way to surprise Japanese people is to sing a famous enka song at a karaoke. Try "Tsugaru kaikyou fuyu geshiki" for example :)
