Ever Met Any Famous Japanese? - TheVinster - 2012-09-21

I'm quite interested in, when I can visit Japan again, trying to make some 芸能人 or something. Has anybody here met anybody who is popular in Japan or what not? A Japanese guy on my friend's list on Facebook once posted a picture of him with IMALU. Quite jealous of that guy. What are the chances of ever meeting a famous Japanese actor?

Probably the same chances you get anywhere else in the world? Living in any big city and attending special events will increase your chances of running into someone famous. I don't see why that would be any different in Japan or Tokyo.

I met an actor in Japan, but he's not really famous or anything yet.
I just made a posting looking to meet people and hang out when I was visiting Japan, and this guy contacted me back. After we met, he told me that he is an actor and is starring in a new movie that's coming out. The movie apparently got delayed because it was picked up by warner brothers, so they are reshooting some stuff or something. I forget what it was called, I'll have to check on it later.

Only celeb I ever met was Yuka Kashino and not in Japan but Hawaii.

Plus a strangely high number of Japanese politicians including eating dinner with all of the governors of Shikoku at the same time.

Oh wow! Could tell a little more about this? I was in Honololu around the same time this year, and found out later that she was vacationing there. So sad that I didn't run into her (though I'm guessing they kept a low profile).

As for myself, I've only met a few celebs at anime conventions. Notable ones being Kotono Mitsuishi (voice of Sailor Moon and Misato Katsuragi), and Yuki Kajiura.

My friend from Japan met Seiji Ozawa (the most famous music conductor) at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He was walking outside after his concert. Since it's New York, no one except my friend knew who he was....lol.....

I've met the guys from Internet radio(something to this effect not sure they are comedians) without knowing who they were twice once walking in shibuya and then roppongi in the same week. And other famous people I knew quite well went on vacation with a couple but not going to say who they are in case someone finds this and links it to me. Plus this is the Internet I could say I partied with Obama and you can't fact check me.

Edit http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=6EvPHrPS-ak&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D6EvPHrPS-ak these guys but that's a mobile link

I've had a few small brushes with Celebrity here.

Back in Hokkaido I was an extra for a couple of shows, a TV movie, and a few commercials, so I met a few people through that. Probably the biggest names I met during that time were Kanda Sayaka (Matsuda Seiko's daughter; it was her first "big" acting job) and Kobayashi Nenji.

Since moving down south, there are a couple of people in the Japanese sword class I'm taking that are involved in NHK jidaigeki as instructors and extras (so maybe not that famous, but in "the biz"), as well as one guy who's done a couple of bit parts and some voice work in Anime (slightly famous). Oh, and one girl who's in a parody idol group sort of thing that has had a couple of minor TV appearances. Stretching the topic a bit, in terms of non-Japanese people who are famous in Japan, I've met Dante Carver (the guy from the Vodaphone commercials), Bobby (whose Japanese is much better than he lets on in character), and Dave Specter.

I've also met Carrie Fisher, Jake Lloyd, and Anthony Daniels in Japan, though that's getting further outside the scope of the question.

I'm sure Dave Specter is a nice guy but his hair... ugh.

Ever Met Any Famous Japanese? - kainzero - 2012-09-25

I met Shinya Arino from Gamecenter CX. He did a show here in LA.

Ever Met Any Famous Japanese? - kitakitsune - 2012-09-25

LOL Dave Specter is NOT a nice guy. He's fairly infamous for being a total dick.

Didn't know that, just remember seeing him a few times. Also saw him while watching FNN a few hours ago. Well if he's such a dick it sucks he has his own spot on the news. Jealous as hell.

Ever Met Any Famous Japanese? - kitakitsune - 2012-09-25

He is only on TV because he has (fake) blonde hair and (fake) blue eyes and he speaks Japanese really well and that makes him some sort of defacto "expert" on US culture...But the guy really has no idea what he gets asked to talk about and no one in the Japanese news industry cares about hiring a foreigner who is an actual expert on anything.

I have met most of the famous Japanese drifters. Keiichi Tsuchiya, Ken Nomura, Daigo Saito to name a few. I know nothing in comparison to real celebs haha.

This doesn't constitute meeting a famous Japanese person, but I briefly glimpsed Tanoshingo as he was walking through Amore in Kyoto. He was cordial enough to stop for a photo with another diner there, but he did look like he was trying to avoid too much attention.

Once when we were on the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hiroshima I wondered why there were so many police officers on the train. The platform at Tokyo had also been full of them. Then while we were stopped at Kyoto the man sitting across from us suddenly turned to my wife and said, very excitedly, "天皇陛下!天皇陛下!" We rushed to look out the windows on his side of the train. The Emperor was on the platform, having just gotten down from the train on the track opposite ours. Just then the Empress came out of the train and they walked down the platform together. They had filled our train with police because they know it would be there at the same time as the Emperor's.

Similar event for me. I didn't meet them, but I when I was flying back to Africa I noticed this ring of suited security guys outside the VIP lounge in Narita. Asking one of them, turned out the Emporer's son and his wife were flying to Amsterdam and would be passing through. A few minutes later, the couple walked out, walked past the throng of reporters and photographers and got on the plane. Should have taken a photo, but it seemed rude to me for some reason.

On the other end of the spectrum, I've done a couple of commericials for the US military bases in Japan (AFN) so now I'm getting the occasional "Hey, I saw you on TV" in addition to the same joke related to the commercials. Yes, everyone means well. Still, it's kind of disconcerting so I can only imagine how tedious that would get for famous people.

i was chatting with a rock star in a park in tokyo once. i didn't know he was famous, he just looked chill and i was alone in japan for the first day ever. while we were talking a couple girls walked by, gasped, waved, giggled and walked away. i asked him if he's famous and he shrugged unknowingly. later when i told some japanese folks the name of his band they told me, oh yeah they're famous...but uh, yeah i don't remember what band it was <--shame

I met the comedy Duo Span! although I don't think they're really well known outside of local tv in Osaka. A few NMB48 members out in Namba, otherwise no one actually nationally famous that I'm aware of.

It's probably annoying that I've made several posts in a row, so I'll stop after I necro this thread and start a new one (I found this thread while searching for one about Japanese actors).

Anyways, I met the jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara after one of her shows at Yoshi's in San Francisco. She stayed to sign autographs and chat with her fans. She signed our album and offered to take photos with us. She was still there even when only a few fans were left.

I met Hatsune Miku in Akihabara but I was too nervous to ask to take her picture and when I went back later to try again she was gone. ;_;

I met the flamboyant enka singer Mikawa Kenichi when he came to Los Angeles three years ago for the Nisei Week parade. I also ran into Thane Camus when he was in Seattle interviewing Japanese tourists who had come to see Ichiro Suzuki at Safeco Field. (I did not meet Ichiro.)

A friend of mine to university went to high school with Maria Ozawa so I met her a few times at various parties. She's super friendly and always hangs out near the bar and talks to every single guy that comes up to her. (She's an AV star so googling her is NSFW.)

I also shook Bob Sapp's hand once on the street in Roppongi. Dude is crazy big and super nice.
