A RevTK "Lite" Option - Lindley - 2010-07-08
I just started using RTK Lite, but something is not right. I was studying cards in Lite sequence, adding them via custom selection. But on the third day, in my New Cards stack appeared a bunch of cards that I have neither studied nor added. The weirdest thing is that I can see and review them in New/Failed stack and Detailed flashcard list, but not in Remove from list! When trying to delete them, it says that there're no such cards. Help?

I've been going round in search circles for like an hour ><
Ideally I want the JLPT 2 and under vocab using JLPT 2 and under kanji. But anything that is the right kanji is all good!

I started working with the long-awaited "substitute keywords" option yesterday, after disabling Woelpad's script.
But there is a big problem: French keywords are displayed right in the Study tab, but in the Review mode, it is still the original (Heisig) keywords.
Also when I go to the "Detailed flashcard" list, the French keywords appear briefly, then switch back to the Heisig ones. The same occurs with the "restudy kanji" list.
On the other hand, when editing a card, the French keyword is displayed.
I have investigated a bit further and the culprit seems to be the "Alter sequence" script. Toggling it on and off reproducibly causes the problem to occur.
Unfortunately, I switched to the RTK light about half way in my study, so I need to continue reviewing the "less common" kanji from the beginning of the list which I have already memorized. I would be in trouble giving up this script.
I posted this question in another thread and got the following reply from Fabrice:

If you haven't already you could pick a list of the NON rtk lite kanji and first remove all of these from your flashcards. Then you can request me by PM to reset your cards; that would be roughly 1000 cards I could move them all to stack 6 or 7, you 'd get one full review to get the cycle going again (plus/minus a random interval if you want) so failed cards go to failed pile and those that pass will be off for 3 months or more.
Short of that, I would need CSV data from your flashcard export where you have swapped the schedule data around to match the "artificial" keyword applied by Alter Sequence; if that makes sense.. that's kinda tricky hence my blunt suggestion above. If you do have schedule data in the same format that the export gives, I'm happy to import it for you.
Before I jump into this, is there any chance that Woelpad might get the "Alter sequence" script back to work together with the new "substitute keywords" function of the RevTK website, instead of his former Substitute keyword" script?
That would be great, but I have absolutely no idea of how much work this may require. So maybe I am asking too much…

using data from http://www.ravenbrook.com/project/etp24/tool/cgi/heisig-index/ i parsed all the kanji and which other kanji they are used in and created lists primitives used in order for kanji odyssey 1-3 and jlpt levels n5-n1...

this should be complete for the jlpt levels up to n2 and for ko1 & ko2 because all of the kanji (except 3 from ko2) are part of RTK1, so i could manually check those remaining 3 to make sure their primitives were already in the set. for n1 & ko3, the primitive re-ordering data is incomplete as i don't have the RTK3 data to parse...
if anyone knows of similar data for RTK3, i could use it to complete my primitive checking for ko3 (1110-2001), jlpt n1 as well as joyo2010...
one thing to note, there might be a few conflicts with the rtk1 book, because for example, the site i used lists generations (世) as being made from keywords twenty (廿) & fish hook (乙) where as heisig says it's 3 tens (十), but i think the site makes more sense than the book, so i kept it that way...
i am currently almost finished creating an anki deck that has lots and lots of tags...
ko1, ko1p, ko2, ko2p, ko3, ko3p, ko-order, ko-heisig-order, n5, n5p, n4, n4p, n3, n3p, n2, n2p, n1, n1p, jlpt-order, jlpt-heisig-order, joyo2010, heisig-order, frequency-order, rtk1, rtk3...
when i am done, i will upload it and anyone should be able to easily study in whatever method they choose... ie, if you want to study for the jlpt n5, just suspend everything except n5 & n5p (primitives needed for n5)... when you are done and want to add n4, unsuspend n4 & n4p. if you then choose to start working with kanji odyssey, unsuspend ko1 & ko1p and it will add in all the kanji that you missed out from n5 & n4... i think it will offer everyone the flexibility they need, no matter which method they want to study rtk1 in...
my plan is to do ko1 kanji, then start ko1 sentences while working on ko2 kanji... i live in japan, so i need to get real world use out of this asap. the normal rtk1 method takes too long before you can put it into practice...

@Danaduck: Great lists. But the better suggestion would be to get these running without the script. Of course, if you're on anki, you don't really care.
@JMignot: I'm sorry, I'm not really intending to keep my scripts alive for the sake of a few old hats. Once Fabrice has implemented the same functionality, the best service I can give is in helping transition to that. But it seems that Fabrice has already taken care of that as well, which is very kind of him.
JMignot, if I may make one suggestion. You don't seem to be on a fast-track to complete RtK. Why not simply restart from 0? I've done it before, once for getting too far behind on my reviews, once when starting the Japanese keywords pack. I never looked back or resented starting over. Don't depend on technology/others to keep your life on the same monotonous track forever. Rethinking your approach from time to time is as important to progress as doing your reviews. Good luck.

I agree with your arguments, especially since this site now allows one to customize the *order* (not only the content) of the study list. This, unfortunately, I did not realize till now! Sorry for bothering you with unnecessary requests.
Fabrice was very helpful in transfering my current review status to the "plain RevTK" configuration. Everything works fine, thanks to him.
I feel I can afford to be "old hat" since I will be 60 next summer. Also I am not sure to live long enough to ever complete RevTK if I restarted now from zero now… As you noted, I am not on a fast track. One reason is that my present memory does not allow me to join the 100-kanji-a-day pack. Another one is that, as you also recommend, I changed my strategy already a couple of times in the past and, at this point, RTK is no longer my number one priority: I am taking Japanese lessons on the Web twice a week, studying vocabulary using Anki, listening to podcasts on my way to work every morning… and eventually maintaining a time consuming professional activity. Therefore, I am happy if I can keep alive what I already learned, and add some 10 or 15 more kanji every week, which should take me to the end of RTK lite by the middle of next year. I am still having fun at it, thanks !
And thanks also for providing these scripts which helped me using this site in a much more comfortable way for many months.

Note: the Alter Sequence script should no longer be used.
To be fair the website doesn't know about the "sequence". It only knows about the original RTK sequence. The way to study those lists on RevTK, is to add the kanji in Manage > Add Cards > Custom Selection (kanji or frame numbers), parts by parts. That way you can review the added cards each session.
One helpful tip to keep in mind is if you aren't sure just how much you added before, you can always add from the start of the sequence, if any kanji are already added they are ignored. There is always the confirmation step as well which shows which characters are effectively added (not already in your cards).

Could you maybe implement a [spoiler] or [hide] tag, ファブリス? It would help reduce the amount of scrolling necessary in some threads with large informing lists. It is used on some fora I know just for this reason: hiding bulks of information to keep the thread more clean.

I think the problem is this data should be hosted on Google Spreadsheets or similar service, to be more readily usable and downloadable.
Then it should be gathered into Kanji lists, Joyo, non-joyo etc. (Sticky topic).
danaduck: could you please create a topic in there (link above) ? I will edit out the data and move it there in your post, so that you can edit it yourself later (though if you can do that yourself it would be very appreciated). The idea is that you have your own topic to share your data, keeping in mind that on this board you can edit your topic as long as you like.
