The "Congratulations, I Just Obtained Japanese Literacy" Thread - Nukemarine - 2007-12-05

I'll be honest, this is in reaction to threads on other Forums that degrade or downplay the use of Remembering the Kanji. So, post your literacy success stories here if you can. Be as detailed as you can. Especially note when you began using RTK in the process and how it helped (or hurt) your progress. I think that it should be important to note if you finished RTK1 and/or how you used it.

As for what qualifies as Japanese literacy, well, probably that's the reason I posted it in this sub-forum. How you consider yourself proficient can be in your success story.

I've been meaning to reply to this thread for a while. Here's my story.
I completed volume 1 in about three months just before moving to Japan in 2005. With the familiarity with kanji that it provided me, and my prior knowledge of Japanese, I was able to easily prepare for, and pass, JLPT level 2 in December of that year. Around the same time, I began reading young adult novels and around August of the following year, I read my first adult-level novel in Japanese, Ring, by Koji Suzuki.

That same year, I passed Kanji Kentei level 6, and JLPT level 1.
I have continued reading in Japanese and can now read virtually any typical novel without any reference materials. I have also read books on programming languages, and now on resume writing/job hunting, all in Japanese.
October of last year I passed level 3 of the Kanji Kentei and am now aiming at level 2 for October of this year.

And I have little doubt that all of this would have been much harder, and progress would have been much slower, without Mr. Heisig's book.

Thanks for the reply Jimmy, is there anyone...

Ok, I'm being a smart ass. The thread's a year and a half old and I'm still no where near fluent. Damn it.
