I see off air a lot, and right now Sopcast and Keyhole can't connect to pretty much any station.TokyoTV and TBS used to air for me 24/7, until recently. I believe it uses the same feeds as SopCast. program that stream live TV? - blackbrich - 2012-10-03 I think they're doing server maintenance. http://blog.livedoor.jp/nijitv/archives/18485994.html Assuming thats their real blog that is. program that stream live TV? - gaiaslastlaugh - 2012-10-03 blackbrich Wrote:I think they're doing server maintenance. The blog is linked off of their home page, so it's legit. Some thought it was a Chinese conspiracy. lol. program that stream live TV? - Espionage724 - 2012-10-08 There appears to be a new announcement: http://blog.livedoor.jp/nijitv/archives/18696512.html But I don't believe Google Translate is doing a good job at translating, and lack the skills to actually read it myself. Sounds like it might not be back up for a while, but does anyone happen to know what it says? program that stream live TV? - gaiaslastlaugh - 2012-10-08 From what I can tell, it's pretty vague. Something about wanting to protect/guard the service, but also make it free for everyone. A promise for better reports from here on out. And, in the comments, some poor guy who's mourning the fact that he can't watch the big soccer match this week. :-| Sounds like it's going to be down for a while. program that stream live TV? - Guoguodi - 2012-10-08 Yeah, it's been down since October 1st. Whoever is behind the NIJI player/site (apparently it's Chinese-run) has been releasing blog updates but they've been pretty vague. People on 2ch were first speculating that since there was a long holiday in China recently that the NIJI/SopCast servers were undergoing "maintenance", and would be back up after October 7th. But that date has now passed and the service hasn't restarted, and some posters on 2ch are even wondering if it could have something to do with the Senkaku Islands issue. Either way there's nothing we can really do about it, other than sit tight and hope that whoever was broadcasting decides to start doing so again. program that stream live TV? - Espionage724 - 2012-10-09 If anyone would be interested in streaming content from NTKTV without their Java program, here's how: Open the following in a browser: http://61.172.249.113:8080/jptv24vod/ Choose a channel (for example, TBS01 = TBS) You should be now taken to some .xml page: (for TBS01) http://61.172.249.113:8080/jptv24vod/TBS01.xml Take note of the baseURL on top: (for TBS01) mms://61.172.249.113/jptv24vod/ Also take note of the numerous .asf files listed Using Windows Media Player (or another player capiable of mms/network playback), use the following method for choosing a file to play: (for 14:00 segment on TBS01 on 10/9/2012) mms://61.172.249.113/jptv24vod/TBS01_20121009_1400.asf mms://61.172.249.113/jptv24vod/ - being the baseURL TBS01_20121009_1400.asf - being the .asf file for the segment you want to stream Now as for getting continuous playback of segments one after another... I have no idea how to go about doing this. program that stream live TV? - shinsen - 2012-10-09 Very interesting find! The mms streams aren't opening for me for some reason though. program that stream live TV? - Espionage724 - 2012-10-09 shinsen Wrote:Very interesting find! The mms streams aren't opening for me for some reason though.Hmm, are you using Windows Media Player? I thought I recalled trying this in the past before with WMP11, but it didn't work. Tried it yesterday (after someone messaged me about it) and it worked fine. program that stream live TV? - BooBooQ88 - 2012-10-09 Nice find there, Espionage. I can confirm this works using VLC 2 on Windows 7. Now if only you could find out what the streams were actually showing beforehand
program that stream live TV? - shinsen - 2012-10-13 Interesting... This is all I ever get in VLC: access_mms access error: cannot connect to server access_mms access error: error: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found main input error: open of `mms://61.172.249.113/jptv24vod/TBS01_20121009_1400.asf' failed program that stream live TV? - Espionage724 - 2012-10-16 VLC seems to work fine on my end; I'm using 2.0.3 (latest stable). It also seems you may be able to setup a playlist. I'm doing a bit of experimenting with it now, but in theory, you could have continuous playback of any amount of streams one after another. Here's a quick test playlist: http://puu.sh/1fE5Y (reuploaded) It's a .xspf file, which is a playlist format for VLC. It should start a playlist that goes from TBS01_20121017_0800.asf to TBS01_20121017_1700.asf (10 stream entries). The concept is that VLC will start with the 0800 file, stream it for an hour, and then continue with 0900 (which should exist on the server by the time 0800 finishes), and do this until the end of the playlist. Some feedback if that playlist actually works would be nice ![]() Edit: It seemed VLC was having issues with trying to play the playlist in order (it jumped from 0800 to 1500 for some reason) but I think right-clicking and sorting by title fixed it. I tested the continuous playback by starting at 0800 and seeking around 59:40, waited, and it did manage to continue onto 0900 on its own

Perhaps it just "doesn't work" for some reason at times, but idk program that stream live TV? - dada_zap - 2012-11-14 Hello, I'm working on maintaining a guide on watching Japanese TV via internet. Since all the Sopcast streams have inexplicably gone down, I've been looking for good replacements. This looks like it's a quite nice alternative (despite being a little laggy), so thanks for finding it! I'll write a little script that grabs the latest day for a particular channel and then constructs a playlist for VLC. btw: I can view the channel just fine but I've heard from some other people that they can't. VLC just refuses to use it. My 1.1.12 does it just fine, but someone else downloaded that exact version and it didn't work for her. The latest 2.0.4 doesn't play it, even for me, stating that it doesn't have an MMS module. Anyone know what the problem is? Also, if anyone has any information at all about the Japanese Sopcast streams, please let me know. They seem to have vanished literally without a trace. program that stream live TV? - Espionage724 - 2012-11-14 dada_zap Wrote:Hello, I'm working on maintaining a guide on watching Japanese TV via internet. Here's some random information I picked up: - NTKTV (java) seems to download the .asf on UDP port 5168 - VLC 2.0.3 and 2.0.4 nor WMP didn't let me play mms://61.172.249.113/jptv24vod/TBS01_20121114_2200.asf - Using the same link, but with udp:// instead of mms:// didn't lead to an error, but it didn't do anything at all (no data from server) - NTKTV (java) calls "wmplayer" with "cmd.exe /c wmplayer" (decompiled o.class to figure that out) - NTKTV (java) uses a XML parser (possibly built-in?) to read the XML at the IP program that stream live TV? - Espionage724 - 2012-11-14 Hmm, so I just pasted "mms://61.172.249.113/jptv24vod/TBS01_20121114_2200.asf" into the Run window, and it opens up WMP and play the link just fine (currently) Manually inputting the same exact link into VLC doesn't work (fails to get file) Edit: Now it's working in VLC... very strange. Edit: Seems to not work in the early morning for me (7AM EST) but worked fine in the afternoon (3PM EST) program that stream live TV? - Espionage724 - 2012-11-14 Ok so the playlist I posted above is currently working, and has been working fine for hours on my Ubuntu 12.10 x86 machine. Nothing special needed doing that I know of (just transferred the playlist to that computer and ran it). No network errors, no skipped videos, just straight playing, one after another... Only issue I had was some occasional hitching on video, but this is because of my internet connection. Edit: Another issue I had was random audio outtages. I don't know if this is because of the video, my network, my hardware, or Ubuntu, but it has happened a few (not often though) times. Trying to use the same playlist on my main desktop fails. I'll have to figure out what VLC version my Ubuntu computer is using though. Edit: It's using 2.0.4 on my Ubuntu computer. The same version for the same architecture (32-bit/x86) fails to play the playlist on my desktop. program that stream live TV? - Guoguodi - 2012-11-15 I think we have to be careful not to bite the hand that feeds us. There's a perverse incentive at work here -- naturally we want to share something we found that works with others, and we want to help our fellow Japanese learners -- but on the flip side, if you publicise certain workarounds too much, they become popular, which in turn leads to these loopholes being fixed, or worse, the service being shut down completely. The Sharer's Dilemma, I guess? The old adage is probably true in that sadly, there is no such thing as a free lunch (that lasts indefinitely). Either you pay pretty significant fees to get access to the content, or you make do with what's available for free. Let's enjoy what we have while it lasts, I suppose. program that stream live TV? - dada_zap - 2012-11-15 The Sopcast streams were as close to a free lunch (which I don't think is a particularly good metaphor for anything) as you can get: everybody contributes a little bandwidth, making the system strong and load-balanced. There's a source, of course, but its bandwidth contribution is minimal, making it a very cheap and solid solution. The only problem with it is you can't force people to pay in order to access the content. Once that becomes a necessity, you're pretty much forced to use a centralized server, which is very inefficient. If you were to calculate just how much it costs to get a number of good, popular channels on Sopcast, I'm sure you'd find that it's nothing that can't be supported by voluntary donations. After all, as the user base grows, the cost of running the system remains the same. The only problem with that is the fact that having a public face makes you liable to be taken down by the authorities. program that stream live TV? - squarezebra - 2012-11-15 I'll go one step further than Guoguodi and say there's a difference between a free lunch and blatant stealing/piracy. There's tons of free stuff out there for those that don't feel they 'should' have to pony up for services/content. It's no coincidence that Sopcast streams in Japan pretty much vanished when the new anti-piracy laws came in; people prividing this content knew that they were doing so illegally, and are afraid of the possible penalties for doing so. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I've not downloaded stuff in my time that really I might have paid for. But that you have and you can, doesn't make ever make it right. I pay for NTKTV on a monthly basis because I think it's a very good service, and one that I use enough to justify the cost. I do however think it's a little overpriced, and I can see why a lot of people would baulk at paying that much. program that stream live TV? - dada_zap - 2012-11-15 I think it's perfectly fair to pay for a useful service, but like you say the commercial options are overpriced. I'd say they're extremely expensive. Part of the reason for why they are is the fact that it's not very efficient to use a centralized delivery system. That's why Sopcast offered good quality at undoubtedly a small cost for the source providers. This is just another example of money standing in the way of a good, efficient solution that benefits people the most. What I do balk at, however, is the idea that a few enthusiasts are disallowed from serving Japanese TV content online to people who aren't even part of the commercial target audience. That just rubs me the wrong way. Aside from that, the anti-piracy law that was recently passed in Japan is completely draconian. Hopefully someday we'll see the P2P streams return. |
