Now the only thing I need is to a way to view the video in VLC so I could force the correct display ration. The built-in player has the picture squished from 16:9 to 4:6. Not a huge deal but a bit annoying.

yeah it is kinda annoying. if a stream as running in the sop client, you can view it in VLC by file > open network, and paste http://127.0.0.1:8902. It seems you need to re-open this each time you change the channel though.

Enable auto reconnect by clicking the "Repeat" button on VLC's main window (it's next to the "Shuffle" button) and it'll work like a charm when you switch channels in Sopcast.

I started getting that after I uninstalled NIJI. I installed NIJI because everyone was saying it was so great but for me the program ran really slow. Assuming the issue is with SopCast as it was for me, I reinstalled SopCast and it works again.

NTKTV was the first reliable way for me to watch Japanese programming, however, I hated that I always had to manually start the next 1 hour segment when the last one ended (in other words, I couldn't just leave it sit on-screen 24/7 without me having to do anything).

The problem with NTKTV is that the software interface is just a time log without an easy way to browse content. They have an excellent archive of TV content, I can't believe they didn't design the interface for Hulu-style content browsing. What they have is essentially on-demand programming and it could be awesome with a little user-friendliness. Much better than live streaming waste of time nonsense where you mindlessly flip through channels hoping something interesting is on. Live TV is so last century.

Small FYI, if your on a later Win OS like Vista/Win7, You should toss your favorites.xml in the Virtualstore rather than the usually protected Program Files directory.

Just type this into the Explorer address bar:
%localappdata%\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\SopCast\

(Well, you probably don't need the x86 part if your on a 32 bit OS.)

Also be sure to save the favorites.xml as utf8.

Anyway, now for a question. Any channel lists for other language channels, like Taiwanese or Korean?

Googled a bit and it seems to be related to administrative power. That directory can apparently be used when a program that doesn't have administrative control tries to put files into a place that requires it.

I'm not computer savvy, I just know that I've got a very new one that's running win7 64bit, and sopcast seems to be working now Smile

Your right, it's not required. You just don't need admin access to make changes to the VirtualStore.

Anyway, another ProTip:
If your sick of manually changing the aspect ratio in VLC every time you switch channels, make a new VLC shortcut.

In the "Target" part of the shortcut you can put something like this:

I like watching the language shows on NHK Educational, because it's fun to watch a language show in Japanese. XD I've caught the ones for French, Arabic, & Chinese. I wonder when the English one airs...

For Mac users, this trick also works for MPlayerX. Many thanks for the tips radical_tyro!

The last streaming apps I tried was antTV and keyhole which I promptly dropped because of the bad quality. Sopcast looks to be much better and easier to use too.

I use Yahoo Japan's TV guide to see what's on: http://tv.yahoo.co.jp/ . I don't know if it covers all the TV stations you linked to though.

So I noticed a live stream in Japanese atm on Twitch.tv, advantage is there is an iOS and I think Android apps. Edit: the Twitch.tv iOS app was super buggy but a recent update has improved playback a little bit. I was watching a really nice 720p stream of Torlight II yesterday... playback quality is really nice if you can find the streams that have 720p enabled.

This one's streaming "TOKYO GAME SHOW 2012" as of writing...

Edit2: Oh sweet.. looks like they finally enabled HTML5 on their site so it plays in the Google Chrome app, no need for the Twitch.tv app.

That's what I read. But I have noticed a huge drop in dubbed/movies and TV shows being uploaded in the past 24 hours so it has to be the new law. Like everything it'll probably pass though, scare a few people for a while and then it'll go back to normal--at least I hope so haha.

How do these crappy laws pass so easily in Japan? SOPA turned into a huge deal in the states. Do Japanese people just not care about their laws at all?

I'm sure sales on audio/video media is going to rise soo much because of the law. >_>
