乱暴 -> らんぼう -> Rambo - twofoe - 2012-09-05

I just wanted to share this interesting revelation I just had upon learning the word 乱暴 (rude, violent, rough, lawless, unreasonable, reckless). It's what inspired the name Rambo, for the fictional war hero. It all makes sense now.

Anyone else have any "ah-hah" moments like this?

There's no relation between Japanese 乱暴 and the fictional John Rambo. John Rambo is named after a type of apple.

Ah, oops, I skimmed the Wikipedia page and saw the word 乱暴, but didn't catch the part where it said it was a coincidence. Oh well... it's still an interesting coincidence.

津波 sounds suspiciously similar to the American word tsunami.

I know right! And 寿司 and sushi! Crazy how the two cultures came up with the same words!
