for a six year old, a textbook is probably the last thing you'd want to use.

Can you speak Japanese?

Just try to teach vocabulary and start reusing it semi frequently in easy to understand contexts. I wouldn't try to force anything.

Why do you want to teach your 6 year old japanese?

I don't think a textbook is that great of an idea. You should either teach him vocab and phrases through speaking to him, or teaching him kana personally... same with kanji. Get a little whiteboard and teach like that maybe?

I don't see a six year old staying focused on a textbook long enough to learn much, or at least I wouldn't deal with it well at six.

A textbook for a 6 year old seems unappealing. Try Irasshai. It's a TV show that was on Georgia Public Broadcasting. They have PDF checksheet too for each lesson.

http://www.gpb.org/irasshai

The target audience is actually meant for high school and adults but imo its easy enough for any age.

If you still want a textbook, Irasshai created a textbook for their show as well. You can read this PDF about how to use textbooks + videos.

http://www.gpb.org/files/pdfs/irasshai/How_to_Use_Irasshai_Components_0609.pdf

Quote:PLEASE NOTE
Irasshai was originally designed as a two-year program which was later developed into a three- year program. (PDF page 5)
Hopefully this helps! Smile

Something like a picture dictionary like this might be good:
http://www.amazon.com/Lets-Learn-Japanese-Picture-Dictionary/dp/0071408274

I hear its not terribly great since it was originally a spanish dictionary or something like that, and some of the stuff is a bit outdated. But for a kid, its probably good enough, and he would probably have a lot of fun seeing how to say all the words in Japanese.

*the other items listed on the amazon page below that also seem like there would be some good stuff for a kid.

There are Japanese learning books for kids. Don't get a text book, get elementary Japanese school workbooks. They teach numbers, grammar, vocabulary, etc.. just like in elementary school.
Also, try to teach him Japanese the way you would teach your son English, since he's still young. The way kids learn language is through television, interacting with others, imitating others, reading books, and school.
You can send your son to a Japanese class for kids. There are some places that teach your kids once or more a week, while there are some complete Japanese immersion schools (6-7 hours a day, 5 days a week). The latter is very rare though, except in Japan and maybe some other asian countries.

The most important thing teachers focus on in schools is vocabulary. So I think that would be your focus.

I agree. Immersion would suit the child best since he/she is still very young. You should Google search elementary schools in your area that have a Japanese immersion program in their schools.
