I know there are loads of people on here into developing software and I noted that although there are Japanese learning games for the DS, there aren't any games for JLPT for it. I think this is a hole in the market and think that this could be exploited by someone better at computers than me.

Do you suggest homebrew software or a commercial game? Curious.

I have a game for the Kanken. The only level that kicks my ass is the Level 1. I have to cheat to get a passing score. Oh well, I think it would be a good idea to make a game for the JLPT. I think it would be cool if it almost became like an actual video game, but similar to Pokemon, it has a dex with definitions of all the words and or patterns that you encounter.

Necrojesta: I would suggest a commercial game. I have the knowledge of Japanese to do it but know very little about computer programming. i'd love to work on a project for it with someone.

That'd be interesting. Although naturally it appeals to an overwhelmingly niche market. Designing it in a way so it can be brought onto other platforms would be quite important.

Developing commercial software for the DS is not something that is doable for the average person, because Nintendo hates indie developers. Homebrew is fine, but then the audience is even smaller and the homebrew community for the DS has mostly spluttered out as developers head over to Android and such where they can make money.

Well do it on Android then - I do think it is a massive hole in the market which could be exploited for profit.

Do you actually have ideas for making a FUN grammar/vocab/listening game, or when you say you have the "know how" you mean you're good at Japanese? I think there's a subtle but important difference. Game design is an artform that ties into human desires for entertainment, addiction, etc -- knowing a lot of Japanese does not mean you're ready to design a JLPT-geared game. But anyway, I'm not trying to be negative, just curious. I think it would be great to have a fun game that adaptively leveled up your language skills in different categories (listening, grammar comprehension, blah blah blah).

I'd like to see an actually good Kanken game for DS. It'd take you from 10kyuu right up to 1kyuu and teach you everything you need to know comprehensively. Well I guess you couldn't call it a game, since I'd basically want it to be a dressed up SRS system. From my experience of the Kanken DS game it's really not efficient for learning and somehow I doubt it's very comprehensive either.

Perhaps, but only if you made it in Chinese. The amount of native English speakers taking the JLPT compared to people taking the Kanji Kentei is miniscule.
