If you've never done dorms in Japan, then let me encourage you NOT TO. They'll make your life hell.

I live in a ryugakusei dorm now and it's good fun; the only problem is the terribly inconvenient location of the campus. All the people from my program live on the same level, so we hang out a lot (everyone speaks in Japanese too). However, I think one year is enough for me.

I think Japanese dorms are a different story though. Particularly, Kyodai's Yoshida dorm is perhaps the most infamous uni dorm in Japan. It's over 100 years old (the oldest in Japan), is missing doors and walls in parts, has no single rooms (I think it's 10 to a room or so) and is only 1,000 yen a month or something.

Went and signed the contract for my new apartment yesterday! Well, it's a 仮契約 for now until I get the final confirmation of my acceptance into Kyodai next month.

The place I was looking at got taken just a few hours before I got to the real estate office >.< I was talked into going for a crappier place and was about to write up the contract, but decided to leave and think about it at the last moment. I looked around and managed to find a place right next door to the original place I wanted! The rent's cheaper too. This is it: http://t.suumo.jp/Xg1ilH
It's just behind the McDonald's at Hyakumanben, about a 30 second walk away. Five minute walk to Demachiyanagi station, three minute walk to Kyodai.

Looks good to me! The one thing I wouldn't like is that there's probably only space for one burner on your stove.

Then again, somehow my girlfriend manages to make me big awesome meals with only one burner, so I imagine it's something that you get used to using efficiently.

I envy you the closet! I have a rather big apartment for a person living alone in Kyoto, but my closet is Japanese style and it's pretty annoying.

I get that its a space thing, but rectangular rooms bug the crap out of me. I think its cause the shape makes the room feel a lot smaller. It also kind of limits the things you can do with the room.

EDIT: I'll actually take this moment to ask a question to other people. I've been wondering for a while. Most apartments don't come with washlets on the toilets usually. Anyone know if those are easily installed?

Yeah, the kitchen's pretty tiny. But I make do with one burner now, so it's not a big problem. Yep, the closet's a big plus, especially because of the fact you can hang clothes in it like a wardrobe.

I really don't need the washing machine area because I plan to use a coin laundry nearby, but I guess I can just put a cupboard or my fridge there or something.

This sounds so fun. Good luck.

Once you get into the 6万円 a month range, apartments start to be equipped with washlets, so it's not really uncommon at all. It's just about price.
