Learning vocab organized by onyomi? - sodajerk - 2012-07-29

I've been trying to push through Core6k for about one week now, but it's relatively slow going. I've been trying my best to add 50 new cards a day because I don't like the idea of taking so long to finish the deck, but I'm not sure if I actually have the time to do it. I work full time, so I'm usually working on vocab during any spare time I have.

I'm having trouble making a lot of the cards stick for more than a day or two. It made me wonder if there is a more efficient way to sort the cards for memory retention. I'm currently using NukeMarine Core6k deck. I've also been experimenting with the Kanji Odyssey 2001 deck since I bought the ebook and am trying to figure out which one is more efficient to learn from. Does anyone have opinions on this? I thought since the KO Deck is smaller it might be worth doing first before I jump into the Core deck since it would help with learning Kanji Kunyomi and Onyomi, but I keep going back to the Core deck because it seems slightly less boring since it has pictures. Nearly all of my mistakes from words I'd previously learned have me recalling the Kanji and not the pronunciation. (I'm testing from English to Japanese pronunciation and written form). I'd probably be able to go through the deck faster if I was only testing pronunciation, but I figure I might as well learn everything at once.

Since my main problem is pronunciation, I had an idea come to mind. Why don't I organize a deck by Onyomi pronunciations. That is, I'd start off learning vocab from the largest onyomi pronunciation groups like ショウand コウ. I could create the deck using the vocab from Core6k and Kanji Odyssey, but just arrange them differently. Inside of each pronunciation group would be organized by the original KO2001 order(i.e, #50 from KO2001 would come before #400 etc.). I know not all the words use the onyomi, but still I'd have a pretty good shot of guessing the pronunciation just by learning them as a group. It also would sort of inherently teach me the pure groups by going through the deck that way. In theory, i think it would help cement some of the pronunciations for vocab better.

I have two concerns. One is this might be the equivalent of cheating, but I think after I was confident with a group I could just mix them all and keep testing that way. My other concern is that I'd be learning words in chunks of onyomi, and it might end up skewing my vocabulary significantly. If I can power through it all much more quickly than it would probably be worth doing, but if it takes me years, then it might be dumb since I'd be missing out on necessary vocab just because I hadn't gotten to that part of the deck yet.

Anyone else attempt something like this or have opinions? I'd also like to hear thoughts on which is a better deck to use for people like me that can generally remember the Kanji for the words and not the pronunciation, the Core6k or Kanji Odyssey deck? Even if this is a good idea, if it takes me forever to create the deck then it's not worth doing anyway.

Hyperborea,

I don't think I want to change the card layout. In the beginning I wasn't testing by making myself writing down the Kanji and I wasn't remembering them.

About the pictures: I was wondering the same thing. There are at least a couple cards that I know I'm remembering because of the pictures. However, I can still recall the words, perhaps best because I've been thinking about how I remember them off the pictures, so maybe that is ok?

Any comments about my ordering by same Onyomi idea? I made a test deck as fast as I could by bookmarking words in Midori. However, KO2001 is horrible to work with since you can't search the page since it is all images. I had to manually look up the KO2001 by looking for them on their index. I'll try running through it today and see if I think it's an easier way to learn.

There is something that you might want to be careful of. If you start learning lots of words that all have similar pronunciations, it could be very easy to get them mixed up and make learning more difficult than it needs to be.

That's something I'll try and see if it is happening. One clear issue is with 向く、向かう、向ける it is hard to tell which is which just from the Midori Definitions, but that is something I can easily resolve if I follow through with this method with an Anki deck. I've only gone through 25 words so far using it, but I kind of like it so far. I'll try to run through at least 100 words or so before I commit a major amount of my time, but I love being able to reasonably guess the kanji and pronunciation of the words even on first site of the card. I'm also becoming more aware of the onyomoi and kunyomi's of the kanji this way I think.
