Half way! - ryuudou - 2009-08-06 I have like 14 more to go until 1000 but I don't feel like doing them today. >___> Half way! - Minlawc - 2009-08-08 Well after 7 months of trying, 2 or 3 of those months with not doing anything, and about a month catching up and trying to get over my fear of failure, I finally half-arsed my way to the half-way point. I love being able to recognize around half the kanji I see, though I'd really like to recognize them all. So I'm going to go at this full time, or at the least finish the book within the month. Half way! - wishroom - 2009-08-08 Yeah, keep going guys you're getting there. Getting past the halfway point helped my confidence loads, I didn't have any burnouts after that. Half way! - nebusoku - 2009-08-18 I'm at 1150 now, so I guess I can post in this thread. I managed to get through the first 1000 at about 100/day, but I've had to slow down to about 75/day as I prepare to move. My failure rate for the first review has increased dramatically as well. I was getting 95%+ correct on the first 800 for the first review (I went through the first 900 characters about 8 months ago and then stopped). Then I started studying the characters, adding them to my deck, then going to sleep and doing my first review of the characters the next morning. This, combined with the fact that I hadn't done any 900+ characters through Heisig yet, brought my first-review pass rate down to about 75%, but it's probably better to do it this way for increased retention. My 2nd and 3rd reviews remain strong at 95%+. Half way! - FL1PPY - 2009-08-18 How do you study 100 a day?? Do you sit there and just full on study them by writing for a few hours? I can barely remember 25. Half way! - nebusoku - 2009-08-18 I studied Japanese for many years and lived in Japan for an additional couple years, so the kanji are all pretty familiar to me even though I haven't written kanji on a regular basis in over 3 years. I can already read a financial newspaper reasonably well but my kanji writing is absolutely atrocious. I've been doing Heisig to brush up on that and to help me stop confusing certain similar kanji. Half way! - FL1PPY - 2009-08-18 Ohhhh, thanks! Half way! - enerccio - 2009-08-19 FL1PPY Wrote:How do you study 100 a day?? Do you sit there and just full on study them by writing for a few hours? I can barely remember 25.It take me about three hours to study 100 kanjis + test them. Half way! - stupiddog - 2009-08-30 Finally, after 6 months and four days, I arrived at the half :-) Boy, this was hard work... especially that crazy "person" lesson took forever... But my review score is about 80% every day, and I have 830+ Kanji "safe" (in Box 5 or higher) so I guess I will not forget them too easily. What really helped from getting up from 508 to 1026 was adding the Greasemonkey script for the stroke order font. It happens very easily that you forget the correct stroke order (and whether you start a stroke left/right/top or bottom) for a primitive, and if this wrong order stabilizes, it takes a hell of work to get it right again. Lowlights: - The mandala primitive (seriously Mr. Heisig, what the hell did you think?) - The outhouse primitive (I will never be able to write the Japanese word for political party without thinking of a toilet...) - Missile and spool (took me forever to get into my brain :-( ) But I loved: - Wheatashi :-) {902}, Condoleezza *Rice*, exchange two husbands, just for a day {842}, sueing for words in public (so simple!) {787}, stories for feminine {563} and masculine {743}, *crotch* and all x-rated stories around it, *turkey*, and the poor sheep's word in great detail about the wolf attack {550} Hoping for exciting new primitives on the way to 1531... see you in three months! Half way! - FL1PPY - 2009-09-01 Yes! Half way done and it feels good! It's been a month and countless times I thought about switching over to RTKLite but I stuck it out and (hopefully) I'll be done by next month and I will be on to the sentences. It's absolutely incredible how knowing kanji can help you remember/guess a new word and knowing the whole basic set makes the process easier and faster. Half way! - Fuamnach - 2009-09-02 Finally got to "umbrella". -_-' This has taken me waaaaaay longer than expected - RTK is tough! At the beginning it was alright, but now the reviews are killing me. Everyday everyday 100+ reviews (coz I changed the multiplier in Anki as it was spacing reviews too far for my inferior mind to remember). This thing has taken 1 1/2 months, probably the longest I've every done anything daily ^_^. Heheh, I sound like I'm complaining a lot coz I am. But even though this is tough and I'm exhausted already, I REALLY appreciate this method. Before trying Heisig I had read around and come across a lot of critism about RTK. I heard stuff like "A person who's done RTK STILL can't read any Japanese..." "Using stories to associate the kanji with will just cause confusion..." There is NO easy way to learn kanji..." "Blah...blah..RTK sucks!...blah..." I was already attempting to rote memorise with Basic Kanji 500 (which isn't that bad a book for what it is) and so kind of looked my nose down at RTK thinking "well, if I don't learn the readings, what's the point? But then I came across AJATT and Khatz was like "Don't ask questions, just do RTK, trust me, you'll thank me later..." I was like "who is this joker and why should I trust him with anything?" But I continued reading and things started to click and all of a sudden Heisig sounded like a very sensible idea....similar to something I had thought up before - learning all the radicals first then piecing them together (didn't think to do mnemonics though). (I feel like I have spelt "piecing" wrong, but can't be bothered to look it up -_-) So I thought "meh, one has to take a chance in life, ne?" Ordered the book, started learning (having never used mnemonics before, I was also learning how to do that...) And somehow, a month and a half later, here I am, 1000+ kanji into things... Whoa... TBH no idea how I'm gonna make it to the end...to think I have to do this for the same amount of time I have already spent is mega depressing...I know some people take longer but I'm an impatient sod... I wanna get onto sentences already! Wah! However, I know this is the least painful method (to think that I was going to attempt to rote memorise for 2+ years?? *shudder*) And I know I will keep going just coz I hate not finishing things (no matter how painful or sucky) But there have been some high points... Like some of the stories, some of them made me laugh out loud. Such wonders include "You have to accept that your hippie girlfriend has a CROTCH that looks like a BIRDHOUSE (nest)." and "When she told me she'd given me the clap, I turned white and gave her the finger." ^_^ Finally knowing the kanji in "Nani itten da yo?!!" And being able to recognise about half the kanji I come across. Low points have been... NOT being able to recognise half the kanji I come across. I started trying to read raw manga and simultaneously do RTK but it's just too frustrating, and... WHEN F**KING ANKI DELETED MY DECK! *breaths in deeply, and exhales* This happened yesterday. TBH it was partly my fault (WARNING! NEVER DISCONNECT THE INTERNET WHEN ANKI IS IN THE MIDDLE OF ATTEMPTING TO SYNC - IT WILL DIE OF DEATH!) I somehow managed to retrieve it (a saved copy in My Documents) but it wiped out all my pictures and had to redo a day of reviews -_-. Wanted to throw laptop out the window. Anyway I really hope I manage to stick this thing out. I wanna post in the "Finally finished!" thread and say "Yes!!! it's done! now I'm gonna start mining sentences/KO2001/iKnow/Core 2000/whatever". Hopefully will post again by mid October. Bye for now, and good luck to anyone else reaching this point .
Half way! - Kewickviper - 2009-09-05 Your post was very interesting to read Fuamnach I have also been trying to read raw manga (at number 1247) and am finding it very difficult!! I also lost my Anki deck a week or so ago ![]() (was going away somewhere so setup account and sync'd wrong with my laptop adding a blank deck to the net instead, so when i came back my old deck sync'd with the new blank deck on the net and overwrote it ![]() ![]() ) so I have just been using this site now instead of mainly Anki which I guess will have to do.On a side note: Does anyone on here just use the SRS on the site? I have found it to be spacing them way too far apart for me too soon and have been forgetting a lot of the simple ones at the beginning just because its been too long since I reviewed them. Half way! - aphasiac - 2009-09-05 Kewickviper Wrote:ve just been using this site now instead of mainly Anki which I guess will have to do.Pretty sure there was a poll on this subject, can't remember the results.. Personally I find it fine - I've no idea how it does it's spacing, I've never really thought about it. Just seems to work perfectly for me. Half way! - alphie - 2009-09-15 YEAH! Lesson 27 Finished! Im halfway thru, its taken about a month so far but I definately feel like Im slowing a bit, so I hope this milestone gives me the motivation I need! I really wish I did Heisig earlier, Im trying to fit in JLPT3 study at the same time and its getting confusing :/ But yay, see you at the end.
Half way! - kainzero - 2009-09-15 I made it to frame 1044, going pretty strong. I do about 20-35/day on the weekdays, review in the morning and at night, and I take the weekends off as far as adding new ones. =) Half way! - Xzbeat - 2009-09-20 After a month and half, I made it to frame 1045. ![]() Thanks everyone for all of your stories. I don't think I would've been able to go this far if I had to make my own story for every single frame. I do 25-30 cards a day and will try to keep the pace to finish the book before the end of October. Half way! - Buronzu - 2009-10-04 Hit the halfway point a few days ago. Going to spend some time reviewing and consolidating the stories that I've already learnt, then dive into the last half of the book. Feels good to reach that milestone. Seemed like I'd never get there.
Half way! - jacf29 - 2009-10-04 Xzbeat Wrote:After a month and half, I made it to frame 1045.In my opinion, going with the most popular stories is the best way to go. There are some super funny stories out there that i would have never thought of. Half way! - mattimus - 2009-10-04 1000! I just hit 1000! This is my sixth week of RtK. Here are the Anki stats: Correct Mature: 96.2% Average Time Per Answer: 22sec Total Review Time: 1.42 days Total Correct: 94.6% (5135 out of 5429) I can't thank everyone enough for the awesome stories on this site. Good luck to everyone, I'll see you in the "finished" thread in another six to seven weeks (fingers crossed). Peace! p.s. My post RtK move is "Understanding Basic Japanese Grammar." Anyone else go through it? Half way! - hknamida - 2009-10-04 mattimus Wrote:...Yep. Great book. The one downside I can think of is that it doesn't come with audio. I'm not partying until I get to 1043, because then I'll have... less than a thousand left... ;_; I'm so excited. Half way! - mastermx - 2009-10-11 1026!! finally halfway through. 1016 to go... alrighty then. Half way! - RisuMiso - 2009-10-11 Downhill from here! I'd also like to thank all the people on this forum. I'm mostly a lurker, but this site is a gold mine of information. It's also nice to see people on a Japan forum who are not pretentious and jaded. Back to the book for me! |
