Half way! - BooBooQ88 - 2009-06-30

Just finished with 1044 (End of Lesson 28)

Took me 3 months to get here... But now that school is done I have a lot more time to spend on this.

Adding about 50 Kanji a day... Should be done by the end of July. Woot! Smile

Then on to sentences and AJATT (with my own little twist of course)

Congrats to everyone else that have passed this point and to those that will in the future.

Congratulations guys. Dustin is right is it all downhill.

Half way! - eroichigo - 2009-07-01

Just hit the halfway mark tonight. Hopefully I'll get through the rest before summer ends.

Half way! - zigmonty - 2009-07-01

Just reached half way myself (end of lesson 27) after starting a bit under a month ago. Goal is to finish before the end of july. It's starting to feel easier... did all 76 of lesson 27 today.

Half way! - edsmaffs - 2009-07-04

Just got to the end of Lesson 27 today, past the 50% mark!

Thanks to Dr Heisig for the amazing method, Fabrice for this site, and assorted members for good stories! (Although mostly I make them up myself...)

I'm mainly using Anki to review them, although I use this site as well. This one seems to show the cards more often than Anki? I'm not sure why.

At the rate I'm going now (about 20-25 kanji / day) I should be finished before next term starts! Although I'm going away for a couple of weeks, and I will probably lose a few days after that for catching up on reviews.
After I've finished the kanji ... onto Japanese proper! I'm really glad I've started learning now, because I have ambitions for the JET Programme after university and I guess it will help me if I speak better Japanese for it Smile

It's really motivating going past a Chinese restaurant and knowing what the kanji (hanzi?) on them mean! It was funny how my brain went (courtyard + incense = ? Garden maybe?) and then I realised the restaurant was called 'Imperial Garden'....
Khatzumoto never did put that in 'motivation' for the kanji on his blog ... look at Chinese restaurant signs...

As well as that, I've made a counter that pops up when the computer starts up, telling me what % I'm at through the kanji, updating it after every Anki session. I think I'll feel quite happy looking at it every day after now and seeing it's more than 50%!

Good luck on anyone else who is learning the kanji! They're not as bad as they might feel at times!

Half way! - Robatsu - 2009-07-05

I know exactly what you mean about restaurant signs! I've come across two now where I look at the Kanji before the English name. One sign had *hundred* and *year*, oddly enough it was called the "Centuria" or something... Another one had the characters *four* and *season*, then I looked across and the words "Four Seasons" in big letters jumped out at me, I had one of those "omg, it's so simple" moments.

Keep it up! It's really not at all that far from this point.

1048! I started some 5 months ago and I'm finally past the half way mark! I don't know if anyone else is learning like I am, but I'm very slow and sporadic with studying the kanji. I do my reviews every day or every other day, which is not a problem since these days I have only about 30-50 reviews per day. Most days I don't add any new kanji, mostly due to lack of motivation and time. Every now and then I get a surge of motivation and energy so I add some 150-200 kanji in a few sessions and then take about a week to let them spread out evenly in my reviews while only adding about 5 per day or less.

I know for most people it's a bad idea to stop adding kanji, because it's harder to start again than to continue what you already started, but for me that just doesn't work. I can concentrate really well when I'm in the zone and accomplish a lot in a few hours, but if I'm doing a little every day, I get bored and my stories are very weak so I have to redo them later because I keep forgetting those kanji.

I wish I could do this faster, but I'm happy with the pace I'm at right now. If I just continue I will finish by the end of the year, which is better than never even starting. Smile

those are great moments indeed... although sometimes it's not that easy... most "chinese" restaurants around here have 酒家 on the sign and i always think... "sake + house =... bar?... chinese bar?!?"... turns out, in some flavours of chinese at least, 酒家 means restaurant, and not liquor store, pub nor boozehound... took me a while to figure that one out Tongue

Half way! - nicksan - 2009-07-08

Just a few words of encouragement for anyone reaching half way...

Keep it up everyone! Once you get to the half way point, it's all downhill from there (mostly Tongue). It can feel like a struggle, but make sure you keep yourself motivated.

You'll be posting in the 3/4 and completed topics in no time.

Not quite halfway yet but slowly getting there (767 atm). Started RtK around February this year and have been going slower than most, but it's been tough going with 5 classes all year and work fulltime Smile

Really looking forward to the halfway point as Heisig mentions it gets easier after Lesson 23 (such a long lesson!). I've got a really good grasp on the finger, 2 hands, crotch, birdhouse, and fledgling primitive kanjis, but the last stretch with elbows, infants, and walls is proving to be hardest kanji for me to memorize as of yet >_<

Half way! - manuginobili20bb - 2009-07-11

Just passed 1021! The person stories have been fun, but looks like we're moving away from those. I started in mid-May but took a 2 week break while traveling.

I'm pretty much like you. It's taken me over a year... I am over 1800 kanji with over 1,000 in the 4 or more reviews box...will be done next week. They don't call me yukkuri_kame for nothing! (I did take 4 months off, and my work schedule was hell last year). You loose some efficiency by going slowly, because there is less repetition of primitives, but the end result is the same - and you will feel great!

Woooo!!

I got halfway 2 days ago! but unfortunately fell ill yesterday so didn`t review...

oops!

all good now, and raring to go! I can`t wait to get this finished...

But it`s been such a struggle ot get this far!

and i also feel like the stories aren`t sticking in my head so easily the further i go through the book!

still.. half way! no point stopping now!

Loren

Half way! - bloo8 - 2009-07-11

I'm also half way through now... but decided to take a rest for a couple of days hehe Smile

I'm still thinking of my strategy as I study the other half. I am also thinking of stopping with the SRS and just concentrating with RTK. When Im done with the RTK, that's the time that I'll use the srs again. Would you guys recommend this method? or should I take them together? also, do you think its possible to make 100 kanjis a day?

Half way! - strider62590 - 2009-07-14

Half way after 2 weeks and a day! I'm so excited!

I realize that I'd probably given up by now if I hadn't met my language exchange partners. It feels awesome when they write something down in kanji and I can actually understand it!

Alright, I didn't come this far just to quit! Look for me in the 3/4ths thread next week! Wink

Half way! - DavidZ - 2009-07-17

Reached frame 1021 tonight! It took me 6 months, while also working full-time and with a few crazy work deadlines that seriously hampered my kanji progress.

Lots more kanji work ahead but I have no doubt that I can do it. Truly I am standing on the shoulders of giants. May the gods smile upon you Sebastian Leitner, James Heisig, and Fabrice Denis!

Half way! - thurd - 2009-07-21

First of all congratulations to everyone who made it this far. It's really a challenge both mentally and spiritually and now I also know how hard it is.

1050 in 16 days, triple figures to go. It much later than I anticipated but still not that bad Smile

Half way! - aphasiac - 2009-07-26

whoop, 1026!! finally made it!

I can't remember the exact date I started, but I ordered RtK in March and I believe I started in April. Been doing an average of 10 a day weekdays, and then huge spurts of 50+ new kanji on weekends.

Can't believe I've made it this far - target is to finish by 2nd week of September (to coincide with the end of my Japanese class). I'm then going to start on KO2001!

I'd like to thank people on this site for their stories; I've been using them rather than making up my own, as I don't have the creativity or motivation to do themself. Works like a charm, thanks!!

Half way! - caprice - 2009-07-27

up to 1030 tonight! it has been a long long time since i bought rtk, like 3 years ago, i had gotten to about 200 or so twice, maybe 300ish, but since june or so i've gotten in an amazing groove of reviewing and learning every day. 51 days to go at this pace1

Half way! - aphasiac - 2009-07-28

I've decided to take a weeks break on adding new kanji, to catch up on reviews and failed cards.

Really feeling positive now!

Half way! - KaitouJS - 2009-07-29

I finally made it to a thousand! Granted, that's not 1021 which is actually HALF of the book, but it's a landmark for me! I'll probably be done within two or three weeks. Thanks for the method, Heisig!

Half way! - BakaRakuda - 2009-08-02

Made it past 1100 the other day. I have a goal to complete the rest of the Kanji by the 15th.

I'm actually a little behind today as my programming time and RTK time tend to compete recently.

RTK and this site are really great, I've gone from starting the book on the 4th of july to already half way through in less than a month.

Half way! - enerccio - 2009-08-02

And I am past 1000 as well.... with about month of serious learning.
I started before, went maybe to 500 and stopped.
But not now, now I need to make them until September, all 2000~

Half way! - Rina - 2009-08-05

Frame 1026!! I'm so happy! I learned 56 kanji yesterday Big Grin
I started in late April. Had a month where I was adapting to it and then started for real at a real slow pace. Now I've been adding 30 a day.

Half way! - airiholic - 2009-08-06

Currently I'm at frame 1101. I used to do 50/day but now I'm doing some 100/day minimum.

Earlier this week, I set a goal to complete the book by middle of august. So I started a 'no fooling around period' which spans 2 weeks. During this period, absolutely no facebook and movies, less video games, hanging out, watching tv etc. So far, I'm ahead of schedule.

Less than 1000 to go!
