Half way! - Dakoina - 2010-04-20

Jeej, half way! Or actually a bit further already, because I just finished the RTKlite version. Now reviewing my hiragana & katakana skills, some Tae Kim etc, a couple sentences and afterwards more kanji Smile (or maybe meanwhile ~) feels good

Half way! - wulfgar - 2010-05-07

Congratulations to everyone who has made it far! I know that as you get further, the reviews will get larger and it might become a pain, "rest if you must but don't quit". All of you have invested so much time that you really can just push on towards the final half. See you all at the 1352 (3/4) Thread.

Half way! Now gotta keep going and not stop here, there are still plenty of kanjis left and plenty of reviewing to do! (using Anki so dont bother with checking my kanji koohi review stats Tongue

Half way! - momokun - 2010-06-08

Woot! Halfway! Giant thank you to all the great stories people have posted, no way I could have gotten this far without all the help in that department (MAJOR writer's block before I found this site)

Half way! - Elysium - 2010-06-13

W00t! Made it half way as well. All of the +60 lessons are done (except for those in RTK3).

Half way! - ibardell - 2010-06-18

Halfway at last! I only get really motivated when I've got a trip to Japan planned. Got to 800 before last trip (2007) and then did nothing afterwards. Going to Japan again in 2 weeks and back up at 1044. Yeah!

Half way! - aphasiac - 2010-06-18

Gavin that graph is awesome!

Anyway well done people, keep at it! Honestly apart from a few weird/random groups of kanji, it gets easier and easier from half-way onwards; all downhill from here!

Half way! - uneakbreed - 2010-06-18

WOOHOO!!! Half-way point! 1021 in seven weeks! Painful, but this site is the reason for my success. Thank you all for your stories!

wow, just did the math, thats an average of 146 kanji/week!

Congratulations on getting half way! IF you thought that was painful, you will see your reveiws sucking more of your time, meaning getting to learning new cards is going to take more time and energy. But I have faith that you will persevere through it and reach the 3/4's thread in no time XD.

Half way! - supadid - 2010-06-20

I reached the half way point at some point yesterday and i've been using the one kanji, one picture thread for all my stories (thanks Stoked and RtK forum!)

I've noticed that this thread only goes up to kanji #1586, i'm not very good at making my own stories, could anybody point me to where I can get stories for the rest?? As I expect i'll be at that point in the next 10 days or so...

Half way! - Katsuo - 2010-06-20

In the study section of this site dozens of stories have been submitted for each kanji. I'd suggest checking these as well as the one picture thread and choosing whichever you find more memorable for each kanji.

Wow, It sounds stupid but I never knew about this section of the website!!

Amazing!

Thank you very much.

I'm halfway there! Yay! Can't wait to post to the next thread...so back to studying!

Half way! - Dragonsheep - 2010-06-28

Wow, have I really done that many?

1332 Kanji, with 313 due today...

And, to make it worse, Assimil came in the mail and I'm loving it.

(Looks at RTK lying on the ground.)
"I'll get back to you later."

Half way! - arch9443 - 2010-06-28

I'm on 1070 should hit 1080 today. I used to do 50 a day but cut it down to 20 a day. Was getting pretty bored of doing nothing but Kanji. Now I do a bunch of Smart.fm and reading in Japanese the Manga Way every day along with 20 kanji. Feels a lot more productive =)

Right now my biggest struggle is trying to figure out at what intervals to work on core 2000 with. I feel like if I do 50 items or so back to back then I won't remember them as well as if I do 10 here and 10 there and by the end of the day I've done 50 items. I'm not really sure how to go about that. I'm thinking I wanna do more like 100 a day, but I feel like that might really hurt retention.

Half way! - meredithcat - 2010-06-28

Just hit 1026. WHAT WHAT.

Doing about 75/day right now (I'm on summer break)... let's see if I can keep it up?

Just keep in mind that you will be deep into 300+ reviews/day before long. Doing a lot of facts/day can come back and bite you months later when you are in the middle of heavy exams.

Half way! - Nijuro - 2010-07-06

Just passed the half-way point last night and to celebrate I treated myself to a relaxingly reduced amount of new kanji to study this morning. Will pick the pace back up tomorrow.

Should I really study the second volume as hard as I've been studying the first next or just skip straight to 3? I've been told volume 2 and part 2 of 3 are more like reference material.

Half way! - Koos83 - 2010-07-07

Volume 2 has to do with learning onyomi and kunyomi, whereas volume 3 studies meaning and writing, like volume 1. However, if you've learnt volume 1, you can read newspapers and regular books. Volume 3 feature non-jouyou kanji, so you're less likely to come across those. You do need them if you want to study at university, for example.

But yeah, volume 2 is about the pronunciation. You could see it as reference material, but you could also use it to learn the pronunciation of the kanji and learn new words in the process (some are obscure though). I'm working through RTK2 myself now and I don't regret it.

Half way! - iMat72 - 2010-07-11

Half way! Well, almost (1007). It was a wild ride (I started RTK in February but was slowed down at some point by a long period of procrastination) but I hope to be done by the end of August!

And...yeah, first post after months of lurking. While I'm at it, I would like to thank this community for its wonderful kanji stories! Wink Without them, it would have been much harder to make it this far.

Half way! - Axlen - 2010-07-17

Tonight I reached Heisig #1035 善 - Virtuous. I started last October and add about 5 kanji a day. While reviewing I remember on average about 80%. The number of cards per review session varies between 25 and 30 now.

It did not seem that long ago that I hit the one third mark and now I've passed the halfway mark. Thanks to everyone for their stories and bits of kanji wisdom to date.

Half way! - Mushi - 2010-07-17

Congratulations you two! I started Heisig last month, and am not there yet, still at #891. I've found that the pace slows down for me after getting this far into the book. Partly it's because there's more to review. Also, the lack of stories makes me study more from this site, which means that I can't progress to new materials while just curled up with the book somewhere.

But mostly it's because at this point, I recognize a significant number of characters, which encourages me to allocate part of my study time to reading Japanese materials. I think that this is a positive development, since you eventually need to take that step in order to retain the kanji permanently.

I figure that even if I never get past the middle of RTK1, if I keep reading, I'll at least be able to read at the level of a 6th grader who studied the kanji in the wrong order.

Half way! - gyouza - 2010-08-01

And me too: Half way!!
I just finished lesson 27 and somehow I feel a bit relieved that I've made it this far.
However, I'm finding that lately in the review sessions I'm struggeling. With the first ~500 kanji, I came up with above 95% correct, after that it dropped to 90%-95%, but the rate is still declining...
Also I often am able to remember the kanji from the keyword, but only after thinking about it real hard for a minute or two. Is that normal? Or do I have to work harder on those kanji? Should I count them as 'not remembered' after all?

Anyway, I have to state: This site is amazing!
