Half way! - kmoeini - 2009-10-15 Frame 1000 baby! Onward! Half way! - WeTsTICK - 2009-10-19 After some serious slacking I finally reached the halfway point!
Half way! - CerpinTaxt - 2009-10-20 Well after some setbacks finally got to frame 1000. Looks like it'll be much easier just finishing up. Originally I thought I would just quit when I got to 300-400, but I'm surprised that RTK has worked so well and has made me really get familiar with kanji. Didn't think the mnemonics thing would work for me at first, but at this rate seems like I'll be done right around December which seems great. Half way! - anry0005 - 2009-10-20 It's taken me a lot of time and effort to get here, but I'm glad I stuck in there to get this far. I got stuck at 674 and (for various reasons) didn't do a single review for several months, which of course resulted in me forgetting most of it. Starting over from scratch, I've been able to get to 1026 in about two months. My goal at the moment is to finish before the 歳.
Half way! - chamois - 2009-10-22 As good as halfway: 1007: 貸 LEND - As a SUBSTITUTE for paying with SHELL CURRENCY at the pawn shop, I instead LEND him my guitar and hope that i can get it back I started July 1st and since then i've had 2 big pauses: 1) i decided i was going too slowly and did 200 new kanji in 2 days and then spent a month catching up on my srs and really hating failing stuff. this helped me get over the feelings of "must pass"/"low retention = bad". 2) went to fiji for a week and fell behind on my srs big time and really struggled to get back up to speed, although i did plow through about 300 new on that trip too. I typed up the 300 odd kanji in the space of a weekend and now i'm gradually working through them in my srs at a rate of about 40/day. after my hectic weekend of catch up i looked at my numbers and realised i could hack a much higher rate so i'm now committed to 30kanji/day and 100 reps/day which is quite attainable. I can get through the reps over breakfast, morning tea and in the evening at home, and i can get my 30 new kanji done over lunch at work. at this rate i should be done in about 5 weeks and then i can move on to tae kim and some sentences + get my hiragana/katakana back up to scratch. Half way! - phoneticbalance - 2009-10-23 1026! Over the half way point and still going! The 5 longest lessons are done, longest remaining is only 62 frames long. Started on August 31st and had 5 or so days where I was sick, but I still kept up with my reviews. There was also one day where I tried doing 60 or so frames and failed miserably during the reviews. Apparently the slow and steady approach works out better for me here. I'm sure I'm going about things slightly wrong, I'm lazy in making up stories... doing reviews in the morning on RevTK, fairly quickly going through 20-30 frames or so at night and then doing another set of reviews in anki about an hour or so after that. I probably should spend more time on the learning/story part of things, but it seems to be working so hell if I'm changing now. Onward and upward! Half way! - mypapa12 - 2009-11-01 1026... I never thought I would make it this far
Half way! - Calvineb - 2009-11-04 finally halfway. WOOT! I hope it gets easier like Heisig said it would... Half way! - mezbup - 2009-11-04 Calvineb Wrote:finally halfway. WOOT! I hope it gets easier like Heisig said it would...It does but it also gets grindier because you've been at it so long. Just keep at it and soon you'll be done
Half way! - YogaSpirit - 2009-11-04 Thanks mezbup for encouraging those of us who are still in the very middle of the ocean, afraid to get overwhelmed by a wave or too tired to swim to the shore. I reached 600 in about 1,5 months and another 1,5 month later, I'm at 890 (say 900). I can only do 10 to 15 kanji every two day. I hope to keep a pace so as to get done before June 2010. It may sound so slow to most of you, but that's the way my life is... You're doing an amazing jobYogaSpirit Wrote:It may sound so slow to most of you, but that's the way my life is...It's not slow, it's very good, and it's even better if you do it regularly. ![]() I started my kanji adventure February 3 of this year. I started with a pace of 20 kanji a day, usually learning new kanji 4-5 days a week. Sometime in the 500's, I started falling apart. Once or twice I had 2-3 week period where I did no new kanji at all, and soon after those slumps I would learn 20 kanji a day maybe 2 or 3 days a week. I always kept up with my daily reviews though, and I think this is the single most important thing if you are having a hard time moving quickly and putting in new kanji everyday. Anyways, fast forward to the beginning of September, and I'd made it to about frame 951. About 7 months and not even halfway through the book. Trust me, you guys aren't slow at all I do agree with mezbup that while for the most part, it does get easier, but it becomes harder due to the fact that it just seems like it's more of a grind. This is especially true for me, and so I got some crazy motivation to do more kanji in an effort to get the book done ASAP. In the 2 months since September, I've gone from 951 to 1572, and am planning on being finished by Thanksgiving. Funnily enough. I've also noticed that my fail rates have gone up recently anymore. I don't think it's so much because of lost interest, and I won't deny I've lost most interest now and am dying to just be done with RtK now ;( I think it's due to the fact that for some reason, alot of the primitives seem more complex to me, and he just has some really weird ones that don't seem to stick with me. It's also been very confusing because it seems so many keywords are being rehashed. I was disappointed the other day to see I had failed the kanji for "fall* because I had mixed it up with "fell." -_- I know the meanings in the sense aren't the same but, it just messes with me xD Half way! - CerpinTaxt - 2009-11-05 Ah I wouldn't worry too much about the fails. My first pass rate is like at an 80% (although I never review my stories after I learn them, so this might be the reason) and my pass rate for young cards is like 93%~ but my mature cards are up there at 98% I think if you start to go at a fast pace you will fail more, it's natural you're just cramming more kanji. You're bound to forget. But that's why we have an SRS
Half way! - Pulse - 2009-11-06 Finally, finally, finally halfway. I hit the 1026 mark a few hours ago, but I'm antsy about how well all those 人-stories will stick. I started RtK around April, and I got to frame 500 on October 22... of last year. I've been working at this for a year and a half, or 19 months, at a very slow pace due to my health. I've heard several times that RtK just isn't worth it if you take too long doing it, but I'm happy with it, even proud of it, and I don't regret it at all (though I might have done RtK Lite if I knew about it at the start). My pace is my pace, it's what's worked for me. But. I am stircrazy to return to grammar and vocabulary, doubly so now that I have a friend learning Japanese as well. So I figure I'll do the worst thing possible for a person with my kind of learning speed and take the 100 Kanji a Day route for the remainder of this month, with hopes of being done by my (November) birthday. For moral support and also masochism, my friend is contemplating doing RtK Lite alongside me at 100 per day. If it doesn't work, it isn't a huge deal, but I am concerned I might burn out and somehow cause myself to forget kanji I've already learned. As long as I keep up reviews, that shouldn't be a problem, though. Right? ... Right? I used Mr. T as a primitive and I have good stories. What annoyed me more was the "banner" primitive in the subsequent lesson ("施" alms for example and the kanjis that follow). Pulse Wrote:As long as I keep up reviews, that shouldn't be a problem, though. Right?YES! Do it every day! That's the secret. Good luck! Half way! - Nisshawn - 2009-11-11 1247 and worn out, gonna try about 100 a day for the next 7 days that way I can get back to normal studying for 日本語能力試験2級 a few weeks. ive done about 70 a day last few days and have been reviewing on iflipr on my iphone with both kanji-word and word-kanji as well as multiple choice to give my brain rest at times. seems to be working so far. I hope its downhill from here Half way! - Nisshawn - 2009-11-11 Pulse Wrote:If it doesn't work, it isn't a huge deal, but I am concerned I might burn out and somehow cause myself to forget kanji I've already learned. Im going for 100 a day for the next week to finish up, but Im getting afraid i may forget....i think itll be ok though, if you are able to review with a multiple choice SRS (im using iflipr for my cellphone) its a huge brain relaxer while still reviewng so I hope itll retain well. Half way! - Phail3d - 2009-11-11 Arr! Hit the 1000 a couple of minutes ago. Congratulations for myself and everyone on the journey :p Half way! - MRT88 - 2009-11-12 This is my first post (I'll most likely make another when i finish) But I just hit 1005 moments ago. I just want to say thank you to everyone on this website, I would never have come this far, especially in Lesson 27 (the *person* section) without your stories (even the vulgar ones). Mr. T saved my skin .I'm shooting for 1500 by the end of November, and finish by Christmas. Break a leg everyone! BTW, Nuke, thanks for the stories you've posted. Without this community's help, getting even half way wouldn't have been possible, or nearly as fun. Half way! - Koos83 - 2009-11-14 Ahh reading this gives me the motivation to keep going until I've reached 1026, now I'm so close (I'm at 827). Go Koos!!! Half way! - macd4tw - 2009-11-16 12 days. i maintained the pace of about 100/day for the first 9 days but have slacked these past 3. time to pick up the pace since my goal is to finish in 21 days. Half way! - johnlugh - 2009-11-18 finished lesson 27 (1026 characters done now) has taken around a month, just one more to go and i will hopefully be done by xmas break! kudos to this site, has been awesome so far. |
