I just finished the book today.

Looking back, the challenge of learning Kanji was perseverance. I never imagined it would take years for me to finish this book, and I'm sure I'm not the only one here who felt like giving up along the way - from the times I ended up starting over because I procrastinate and ended up forgetting hundreds of Kanji, to the times when I got discouraged when I look at how much Kanji was left. But everytime such negative thoughts crossed my mind, I just remind myself that I have a choice - to remain Japanese illiterate forever, or to give myself the chance to open up new opportunities in life. And I am very happy to have chosen the latter.

Thanks everyone, and congrats to fellow RTK students who have completed the book as well.

Congrats! And don't worry, plenty of people have taken a while to complete it too, me included Wink

Congrats. It's no small feat, finishing this thing, no matter how long it takes. Make sure to keep up with the reviews every day, if you've been using SRS.

I just finished RTK1!

It took me 43 days, which means that I did about 47 per day. I wanted to finish it as soon as possible so that I could get quickly into "real" learning and I am glad I did, even if it was painful some days.
Now I am going to do the supplement and then I will just learn new kanji when I find them while reading.

Two months ago I would have never believed that this was possible, kanji were for me the only barrier for learning Japanese, thanks Heisig!

I just finished the book half a hour ago Smile
I simply love the kanji, they are so beautiful... so this journey was super fun for me.
I used to learn the kanji by the bad method (by stroke order lol) and one day I have just bumped into a site (nihongoshark.com) which suggested to learn the kanji this way. I have studied every day, and finished in 72 days, working about three hours a day, and staying long nights most of the time.
Japanese now is more fun than ever! You can just look at a sentence
and know what it means, by just knowing what the kanji are!
I just wanted to say thanks for everyone here Smile I wouldn't finish this book without you all! And of course I own a big debt to you and to Mr. Heisig!!
Thanks a lot! Smile

I've finished the first review of my last group of cards, and so technically I think I'm "done", though there are still waves of review to work through before I say I'm done with the deck.

This site has been a great help. I only used a couple of stories verbatim, but the ideas for the radical substitutions were extremely helpful, and I don't think I would have finished without them: Spiderman, Darth Vader, Mr. T, Cat-in-the-Hat. I posted a few radical variants which I found useful: T1000, Tin Man (wizard of oz), and Tin-Man-wearing-a-bib for silver, good, and "eating" radicals respectively.

I spent a great deal of time on creating my own stories, and separated story creation from review. I posted to a couple of threads about my study recommendations.

Thanks everyone, and to those of you who are working through it now, go slow and steady, or fast and steady ... but whatever you do, steady.

Congratulations recent grads of book 1! (I'm still working through reviews - about 75 cards a day or so. My "forgotten" rate is about ... 4% or so, which seems reasonable). I haven't started books 2 or 3. Book 2 seems only marginally useful.

Youhou !

Started 1st of september.
Just hit 2200 and no more unseen card in anki after nearly 6 monthes.
That was long, and time consuming (and i bet i ll still have a daily one hour review for some times...)

Just finished the book today, a year to the day since I started learning the Kanji! It's been fun, frustrating, and rewarding throughout. Now, to learn more!

Yes, time to learn more...once you learn the kanji, you then have learn when it is appropriate to use them (as opposed to writing the word phonetically in kana) and not to use them (where you have to write the word phonetically in kana).

The Japanese have peculiar habits and conventions...there are words for which kanji exist, but for some reason they choose not to use them. E.g., the footnotes to one of my reading selections about flowers notes that "Terms like shoubu and others mentioned in this lesson all have kanji once in common use, but it is not considered proper to use them today except in specialized writing."

I did it! Took 9 months, and per the statistics on the website I've done 24,641 total reviews. Thanks to everyone who came up with the great stories. It would have been very difficult finishing without them and using only the paper book. I hope I came up with a few good stories of my own that will be helpful for future Kanji learners.

I finished a couple of months ago (5th edition followed by the supplement), and have been doing massive reviews on Anki since then. I'm a bit late, but please allow me to present my back for patting.

The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Dovetron - 2015-03-27

Finished!

This was my 3rd attempt at RTK.

first one: summer of 2011, school got in the way.

second one: during the 2012-2013 school year.... not a japanese major, pushed waaaaaaaaaaaay to the side.

Final one: Teaching English in Japan, studying Kanji 2-3 times a week at work. It took 6 months with a lot of time invested, but going slower has given me as good as 100% retention rate (minus the occasional slip, promptly restudied).

I'm very glad I did it out of order... since I use Japanese in my daily life, it helped a lot. technically I still have ~50 jouyou kanji I haven't mastered, but they are in RTK 3 sooooo pat my heaaaad~

next stop is N1 in July!!! lesgooooooo

Yosh!
Thanks all this site made kanji studying so much easier.

Just finished, took 71 days. Time to set new study goals and of course not to forget reviewing Smile
Maybe primitive signal from RTK2's first chapters and then to Core10k.
