dunble Wrote:What's next for me is rtk1 supplement, kana, tae kim, core 6k, and probably dobjg. It feels like a huge amount of work, and I only hope I can maintain the discipline that it took to finish RTK. My original goal was to be able to play games, read VNs and light novels untranslated. Hopefully it's not going to take years to reach that point, but I am at least on the right path.
You'll probably be glad to hear that whilst RTK might have taken you 4 months, I doubt the kana will take you more than 4 days Wink

I just finished RTK1. It took me about 2.5 months or so and while I'm happy and excited that I was able to finish it, I know that this is just the beginning and there is a long, long way to go. I'm not sure what I'm going to do next, maybe RTK2 or something else as I research good methods.

Thanks to everyone who posted great stories because they were amazing and I was always surprised at how creative people can be with the stories. Congratulations to everyone else who completed RTK1 and good luck on your journey.

Finished RTK1 and the supplement. A big thank you to all those have contributed to this forum and the stories. Has been a big help.
2 years of on and off study to finish the 2042 RTK1 kanji then belatedly I finally got round to finishing off the supplement.
On the off periods I kept up with the odd review (in anki) but despite getting way behind and having a huge backlog of reviews on multiple occasions so glad I persevered and finished. At least I know some of the kanji very very well due to the number of reviews ive completed over then time ive taken to do everything up to the supplement Smile

Now back to learning some actual japanese. loved learning the Kanji, for the challenge alone, but about time I concentrated a bit more on grammar and improving my reading skills.

Back to my Minna No Nihongo books.

Thanks again for all those who have been involved in this site.

I can't quite believe I did this. I would never have believed it possible and I am very, very happy. A few thoughts on all this . . .

1 The stories. I am in awe of the ingenious stories on here. Without them there is no way I would have got any distance at all. Heisig's stories didn't make a lot of sense to me and my own imagination often didn't get me far. Without the generosity of other people sharing their stories I would have failed so a huge, huge thank you.

2. The site. Awesome. I tried doing Heisig with just the book three times and each time gave up after only a few kanji. The system made no sense to me. But once I found this website it was just an amazing experience to find I really could learn the meaning and how to write all these kanji. This site turned me from a kanji hater to a kanji lover.

3. So I made a donation.

4. Retention rate. Er, brilliant though the site is it doesn't make up for lack of effort and my retention rate remains stuck in the mid seventies. 80% or more and I dance a jig around the kitchen. I am aware this is not impressive but I have confidence in the SRS system to sort me out.

5.How long it took me. About five months. I am not sure anyone cares how long it takes somebody else but I must admit to being a bit in awe of people who did it in a couple of weeks. But the reviews must have been a killer.

6. Never miss a review. There were times (ironically when I spent a month in Japan) when I stopped adding new kanji but I never missed a review. Right now I seem to get about 120 kanji reviews a day and I don't know how I'd cope if these started doubling up. It takes me about an hour to work through them as it is (admittedly I am using this process as a substitute for learning them properly when I put them on the system in the first place so I am probably being punished for my laziness).

7. Keep reviewing. I have some plans for additional kanji study bit I am not going to stop the reviews. Ever. Presumably they drop down to a reasonable number after a few months????? Please say they do.

7. Next steps. I already have some kanji flashcards and I am going to get some more. Good way to learn to read from kanji to keyword and to learn some associated vocab I think.

8. I am a big fan of japanesepod101 (some people don't seem to like Peter Galante but I think he is the reason the thing is so much fun) and I am going to use it to work on the kanji vocab. They have kanji close up and a ton of good kanji laden sentences.

9. Maybe I will do the supplement. But that feels like K2. I am on top of Everest right now and I don't think I am ready for another mountain just yet (but why oh why is 'dare/who' not in RTK1? - it makes no sense).

10.Well thanks again everyone for making this site the best learning tool it has ever been my privilege to find. Mata ne!

Whew! I bought the RTK series three years ago. My first attempt conked out a few months in at around 300, and my second one, a year and a half ago, ground to a halt at 1200 when I got bogged down in other stuff.

Now, so long after I'd originally planned, and at 4:30 in the morning, I've just finished!! Thanks a million to this site for a great SRS tool, all the great stories, and the supportive messages. I almost certainly would not have finished without Kanji Koohii and its awesome members. I'm thinking this calls for a celebratory donation!

Thanks again everyone!! And now, on to sentence mining!

Congratulations for the not second but third effort! I don't know how many people would come back to it after stopping a second time. Things get a lot more interesting for hereon in. Big Grin

Hello everbody. Like 10 minutes ago, in the subway, i just got past "sign of the snake". What a sweet moment. It took me 8 months to complete it. What an adventure, sometimes a would do 25-30 kanjis a day for 10 days (it may not look as much, but working 45-50 hours a day, i is daunting), sometimes i wouldn't add any new kanji for 3 weeks, sometimes i would ignore anki for 1 week and have 300 kanjis to review. I almost gave up several times, but i finally made it !!

FINISHED!!
嬉しい!

I studied around 20-25 kanjis per day, so it took me like 3 months to end it and it was one of the most challenging things I've ever done. At first i liked the book, then i started hating it and when i was around frame 900 i found out about this site and the fun skyrocketed. Seriously guys, you are great !! Would've had a hard time finishing this goal all by myself, Thanks !

Frikn woooooooooo! Finished... took 7 and a bit months... still a long way to go seeing as I can't pronounce basically any of these kanji... but I think I'll take a small pat on the back before forging on.

My son will probably start talking in a year or thereabouts, so hopefully my Japanese will be better than his for a few years to come =)

...awesome...

also thnx everyone for your stories and congratulations to those who came before me

Wow, three new inductees in the span of a couple days. Congratulations and welcome to the rest of your Japanese learning adventure! It's pretty awesome to be on the other side, ne? ; )

Yeah, it's awesome. And weird/freightening at the same time. I feel like on top of the Everest now but i also realize i basically don't know any real japanese and the real moutain is still ahead. Most of the work is still to be done, but i definitely have an edge now

finished! after 3 months and a week (I thought it would take me 2 months and a week or two, but apparently I am not so good with time estimating =]) I have finish RTK1 (without the supplement).

It was a great ride althought I still have to review quite a ton.

Thank you for all your stories.

on to Tae Kim! =]

The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - kafkatamura22 - 2013-07-07

I was hoping to finish on the 4th of July but hey I'll take Tanabata.

Stats:
-Took three months and three days for 6th edition, so 2200 kanji
-23.3 new kanji learned per day on average
-Over 50,000 total characters written (6x 60-page 140-square per page 算数 notebooks plus about 20% into the 7th one)
-Most failed kanji: 肘 (Elbow)

Still can't believe I'm actually done.

The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - warrigal - 2013-07-07

.... and just added the sign of the snake and starred every story on that last page, because I know what everyone did to get there. Whoo hoo! It's taken 14 months, with a couple of very long pauses during which the reviews blew out to 500 and 600 at times, and if this is you too, reading this while staring up at the last ridges on the mountain and wondering whether you have the grunt for the last part of the climb, take heart! Stacks of due cards can be pulled down bit by bit, review even if you aren't adding new cards, just stay with it ... (the sign of the snake still has the morning dew on it, but some of my mature cards are so old they'd interest geologists.)

Some LEGENDARY storytellers have given us a leg-up along the way - if only we could apply the collective imagination here to other endeavours. Congratulations to all who came before and to all who'll come after. And now I'm off to the donations page.
