The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - xen22 - 2010-11-01 Thanks! BTW, I am now moving on to kore 6000. For that, I made a few interesting scripts to cross-ref my anki-deck: - Merging Minna no Nihongo as tags (i.e. every vocabulary in kore gets tagged with Lesson-XX if there is a match). - Merging keywords+ID from RTK as a new field (i.e. 支配 gets "支 soutien (711) 配 distribuer (1436)"). I just added the second one so not really tested, but I believe it will be very useful to avoid me any unecessary cross-ref (especially when reviewing on mobile device). Please let me know if you would be interested in one of those scripts. The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - rswarsaw - 2010-11-06 I'm sort of in a state of disbelief right now. I finally finished. 18 months. I have 73 hours tallied (RescueTime) but I think it was probably a lot more than this. 32,259 reviews. I didn't think it would be possible with a full time, 12-hour per day job (except weekends) + a social life and all sorts of other distractions... But I finally did it... Glad to join the crew! The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - aargh57 - 2010-11-06 Well I finished rtk1 about 3 weeks ago and continued to review. Unfortunately my hard drive crashed so I lost all my anki. Just bought an iPhone and am considering kanji LS app. I don't want to start rtk over but I may have too. The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - KanjiDevourer - 2010-11-07 Congrats rswarsaw, that is quite an accomplishment! To you as well, aargh57. But that crash is very unfortunate.. reminds me of synching again. But, heads up, you could just start over but use the option to give the cards a review interval. E.g. spread them out so you see about 50 a day - or how many you want. Optionally give the last cards you learned a short interval. Good luck! The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - KMDES - 2010-11-11 Just finished my 2nd run of RTK1 about 30 minutes ago. Took me about 15 days or so. It sure is a lot easier the second time around.
The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - truando - 2010-11-14 3...2...1... 巳 I made it! I'm overwhelmed... I made it in three months, three weeks and three days, despite being really sick at 3/4. I am a traveling musician and I've been to Sicily, Germany, France, Georgia (Caucasus) and Luxembourg while studying, and the nice thing about it is that when reviewing, I remember the places I was when I learned the Kanji. Thank you Fabrice, thank you resolve (for Anki), and thank you all for your wonderful stories and the constant support, dear fellow learners!! The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Sheepy - 2010-11-15 I have calculated that if I continue from tomorrow doing 30 new cards a day, I will finish exactly on New Years Eve. That is if I do 50 new cards right now and hit 700. I think its a good fun goal. ^^ The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Ksero - 2010-11-16 Finally finished RTK1! Took me almost 6 months by studying randomly from ~5 to ~130 kanji a day... The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - truando - 2010-11-16 Well done, Ksero! Feels great, doesn't it? I finished a few days ago. Enjoy the view from the top. The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Dragonslayer131 - 2010-11-17 Whew I just finished RTK1. I kept starting and quitting over and over with my ADD problems but I stuck with it this last time and while it's a year later I finally did it. So happy and tired at the same time (midnight on a school night lol) think I'm gonna pass out on my bed grinning. The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - dat5h - 2010-11-18 Congratulations! Keep it up and the review time will fade away like dust, dragonslayer The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Fishface - 2010-11-20 Done! It took me 17 months and 20k reviews and I know I'm far from actually knowing them all but it sure felt great finally adding 巳! Congratulations to the many people who've done it faster than me and the few who've managed to do it slower
The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - adoette - 2010-11-20 Way to go Fishface! The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Ellen - 2010-11-21 Done! Thanks so much to everyone here for all your wonderful, memorable stories, as well as to the site creator for the site itself. I never would have made it here without all of you. I had already studied Japanese for a number of years before I started RTK, but I never made a concerted effort at learning to write kanji, leaving me in the odd position of knowing the meanings and readings of over two thousand characters yet only being able to write maybe a couple of hundred. Last year I began to think seriously about a career with the language and entered university to earn a degree in it, so I knew I'd have to do something about my awful writing sooner rather than later. Still, I absolutely dreaded having to essentially relearn a couple of thousand characters I already knew, and having to fill page upon page of notebooks with the same characters written over and over again. Though initially a little skeptical of the RTK method, after a hundred characters of it I was won over, and after 2042 I can safely say starting it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Of course there were days where I really couldn't be bothered with my reviews, but on the whole I've been amazed at how easy it's been thanks to both the facilities here and the efficiency of the method itself. Heck at times it was almost fun. Though I think I have Mr. T to thank for most of those. ![]() I started in late January and I'm finishing up a little later than I expected, but there was a point where I stopped reviewing entirely over a couple of months of the summer and ended up with some 600 reviews to do, after which I had my doubts over whether I'd finish at all. So I'm really happy to have made it here, and to have done so within my initial one year target. Thanks again for everything! And congratulations to all those who have finished before me and all those who will finish afterwards. Good luck to you all from here on out!
The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Sheepy - 2010-11-21 Great Ellen, congratulations. Im curious though at what sort of career you're aiming at or what you're doing in university if you don't mind ^^ The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Ellen - 2010-11-22 Sheepy Wrote:Great Ellen, congratulations. Im curious though at what sort of career you're aiming at or what you're doing in university if you don't mind ^^Thank you! I think I'd like to go into translation, as I've done a lot of translation for practice while studying the language, and I found it really interesting. Ideally I'd like to do translations of a creative medium like novels, movies, or even manga or videogames, but I won't be too upset if I end up translating something a little stuffier and more formal, as even that's quite an interesting exercise in its own way. I guess you don't really need to be able to write kanji fluently to translate, but I wouldn't feel right using Japanese for a living yet barely being able to write it. And of course it's a skill I need to acquire if I want to pass my course, too. ![]() Right now I'm just studying plain old Japanese, as outside of a JLPT 2 I don't really have any formal qualifications in the language. Also, while my passive understanding of Japanese is pretty good, my ability to use it myself is almost nonexistent, as I just learned by reading Japanese texts. So it's been a good opportunity to rectify that. I've been dipping in and out of the Japanese course during my first couple of years due to my prior experience with the language, but I'll be in Japan for the latter part of my studies, so I should really be able to spread my wings then. I have an eye on moving on to an MA in Translation Studies when I graduate if all goes to plan!
The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Korvar - 2010-11-24 Technically, it's not until tomorrow, when the last of the RTK Kanji gets reviewed for the first time. I'm assuming that counts as "finished", although obviously I've still got to review review review for some time afterwards But today I went through all the remaining cards in my Anki deck and made sure they all have stories, and there's a whole 13 left to have their very first review. It's taken 14 months, with a 7 month gap in the middle. I prioritised memorising the Japanese classes I took over RTK, which I regret now. I took November off work, and used the time off to ensure I kept a 20-new-kanji-a-day routine up so that I'd be done and dusted with RTK1 by the end of the month. I probably could have done it while working - only an hour, hour and a half a day to do all the reviews - but this was more relaxed ![]() Now... guess it's on to Kore?
The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - AikiTristan - 2010-11-24 I DID IT HOLY COW!!!! Due to having a lot of free time at my teaching post here in Japan, I've been studying everyday for the past 3.5 months. And I did it. Now if only I could speak a single coherent sentence in Japanese... Working on Assimil, Core, and Miller's Japanese Reader now. random excellent & underrated story: "Hitler and Venom are the best of friends and one night they decide to hit up one of Hitler's favourite snack bars together. "I know the most luxuriant snack bar in town" says Hitler (add your own nonPC, comedy German accent for effect ) The reclining snack mama chats with Hitler for a while, then invites Venom in too, where Hitler and Venom get to recline with her--this is a luxuriant snack bar, after all. (spidey underneath a character becomes his nemesis, venom)."
